Taig based lathe mods and addons

This is my square to round and straight setup. I have a very different setup for tapering.
This is not an actual job I am doing, just to show the setup of the saw.
I forgot to add the counter weight that attaches to the rear of the cross-slide. It is just to balance out the
weight over the centre of the assembly. It slides a lot better when balanced.

Well, I finally had enough of the drill chuck not being true to the Taig tailstock shaft.
So I got a piece of steel about Ø1inch or so,and threaded it 3/8-24 and made the pilot a close fit to the drill chuck.Locked the chuck onto the piece of steel.
Then chucked up a piece of steel and turned it to Ø9mm. Closed the drill chuck up onto the newly turned 9mm piece. On the other end that was sticking out about 3-5/8 inches or so, centre drilled , and turned it down to the same size as Taig Tailstock shaft, in my case Ø12.61mm to suit the existing Tailstock body. Next opis to drill the hole for the pin and cut a slot for the 1/8 handle . It will be easy to change out with the other center shaft, just pull out the pin. I did a quick check and all the taps that I use, all run quite well now, compared to how they were.No need to be using center adapters etc to support the tap. I will be able to hold them directly in the chuck. I will take a pic when it is finished. The reason for using the big diameter piece of steel is that I what I had at home here, and it makes a decent sized flange for the chuck to shoulder up against.

Drill-on-shaft

Here is the pic of the drill chuck on it's own dedicated shaft.
It now has 40mm of travel, thinking about it, I could have got a little more than that out of it. Hind sight is always 20/20, but my before hand sight seems to be pretty lousy in this case.

Open the PDF and feel free to copy.

I use one of those for cutting rings. I have found that the teeth saw blades are the same width as the saw body. I always burned the ring no matter how I aligned the saw. I now use a 1/16 wing cutter with 3 blades. A little more waste but nicer cut.
