Taper Saw machine, Maybe???????

I just went to Rockler to get some African Blackwood to make pen blanks for making pens. While there I saw item below set up and running in there back room. To say the least I came up with a hair brained idea that im sure is nothing new. "Table saw shaft machine" Even though I have never seen one in person. This is a unit that replaces the left table wing extension of a table saw. Its a cross slide for a table saw. Could a person buy a second rip fence for this machine. Attach square tubing on side of fence, measuring corner to oppsite corner-both sides to make perfectly straight, more importantly, SQUARE. Do this for support only so that both fences will aways be square when slid across machine. Now make some small 2"x2" squars made of aluminum, drill and boar for a live spring loaded center, and some sort of drive center to drive blanks, attach to fence. Could offset tailstock end to desired taper. Buy a motor, maybe even speed control and make own shaft machine. This really looks like a peice of cake to do. I could even use some sort of bearing housing on the drive side. Heck could even give it indexing for making ring slots. You can get saw blade with kerfs from 1/16 to 2". I think I could make it all for less than $800 bucks. Is this a good or bad Idea. Thanks.

Pc

Anyone having problems getting to link? Something must be wrong with my PC, everytime I try to go to a link, from anywhere, my PC freezes. Any Suggestions?

Saw taper machines have been discussed here extensively.
Just search taper machine.
I had one but had to get rid of it because it was a power hog.
My circuit breaker would trip.
The regular router taper machines are much smaller and can be boxed to contain dust and chips. Table saw taper machines are very messy.
The only really advantage it has over router machines is it cuts cleaner and faster. But, you can also use small saw blades or 6-wing cutters on routers with adjustable speed.

Ive got two saw machines and am building a third that will be CNC doing 4 shafts or butts at once. I dont use a table saw but have the blade built right into my machines and they work extremely well. I dont know how handy you are with tools or if you have any machinery to work with but if you do you can build one much cheaper than 800.00. The most expensive part for my 2 machines are the two good saw blades.

saw machine

Do you guys think that this cross slide is a good foundation from which to start??? I have read that saw machine is more accurate as well as clean cut. What about wobble, or warped side, if using router will I cut from only the high side and get egg shape. I read that this wasnt so with saw machine. What is real advantige other than blade cost and blade longevity with the two?

You recieved bad information. A saw machine cuts the same as a router as far as contour is concerned.
