Technology reason for higher and higher averages?

My hat is off to the hard work and talent that goes into being a top rated carom professional player today. One can have all the technology available at their disposal and most will not come close to the level of play today.

That said, technology has also helped do it's part. Phenolic balls, worsted fast cloth, video access, and low deflection shafts has had a cumulative effect.

Will a 3.00 average in matches become more and more common?

I've been playing pool and straight rail for over 10 years. I am very good at both. Then about 4 months ago I started playing 3 cushion. At best a .30 player. I decided to get a LD shaft. Improved my game a lot. Going to 40 points best I can do is .70. I can't imagine the skill needed for a 3.0 average in tournament play. Hat's off to anyone 1.0 and higher.

I have experienced the same with my Tiger low deflection shaft. I thought when I first got it and saw an improvement it may have been a placebo effect. But that should have diminished by now but still see better control. Technology helps (to a point) but you still have to work and work and work your game. It's fun!

I'm using a Tiger LD shaft as well. I get much better ball control and don't have to compensate as much for deflection on EXTREME draw english shots or extreme follow shots that require the ball to hook before hitting the 2nd cushion. I still use a variety of my other cues and so far the tiger is the best. I am playing on a short Olhausen though and can't wait to get a Euro table.

Hi Billy,
I am glad that i could help you with your Tiger Cue- And i hope you keep up your game sharp,Also i want to thank Bill Smith ( Mr 3 Cushion ) for that,

May your next Kiss will have nothing to do with Billiard:):):):):):):):)

Higher averages in the rest of the world vs USA is proper training starting at a very young age. Several countries have state sponsored training camps.

Just think if any of us were put into a billiard camp with professional instruction at 10 or 12 years old. Technology may help a little but that doesn't explain the discrepancy here vs there.

3kushn,

Although I don't disagree with you in principal, I'm not sure how germane your statement is.

Yes, Europe has a deep farm club/learning infrastructure...but technology raises all boats. Whether consistant 3.0 averages in games by Europeans or Americans becomes more common place is immaterial. Technology doesn't care who benefits the most.

I went to the firing range with my brother's $4k custom shotgun. Didn't do any better than my $125 gun.

3kushn,

I appreciate your anecdote. May I share one? My great grandmother traveled from Kenosha, Wisc to Racine, Wisc and back by horse safely.

I don't know why my mother used a car to accomplish the same feat?

One last thing. I notice in your avatar that you have a Dieckman cue and a Whitten case. I know both gentlemen. They make superior products. Doesn't Kmart carry cues and cases that can hit your cueball and protect your cue as well?

Not to beat a dead horse Steve (no pun intended) but Dieckman is old school. Hand splice, 50 year old lathes, hand made tooling.

The distance from Kenosha to Racine hasn't changed and the car ride was probably on the old horse path covered in concrete. Same goal same route and same result with both methods. Depending on when your mother made the drive, the horse and the horse path could have been more reliable than the car and the road.

3kushn,

Firstly,
That pun was unintended?

Secondly, my retort on Dieckman/Whitten pertained to the price of the two guns which may or may not have anything to do with modernity.

Thirdly,
I am sorry you brought up an analogy that was not analogous. But I figured I play ball any how. Don't shoot the responder.

p.s. I can't wait to get you on a carom table so you can kick my a**

Well if you ever come through St Louis let me know. I'm on the room directory. But you have to make an appointment to get your a** whipped.

Maybe you can make it to SBE. I'll be there and promise not to beat up on you too bad.
