i've just begun to shoot pool.
starting to run a few balls every now and then, occassional help from in house players and wannabe instructors.
dont get me wrong, its all good.

i;ve tried various cues and find i like 20 ounce weight with forward balance.
my stroke shows itself not often but its there and getting better.

where am i heading from these points?

if you are brave enough to post a video of yourself, you will get lots of good (free) feedback, that will set you on the right path before you develop any bad habits

Sounds like you caught the fever. Good luck in your journey towards better pool.

You are heading on a journey of attempting to first overcome an onslaught of disappointment that will turn into an attempt to balance those disappointments with small joys which will turn into an attempt to make the joys the predominant outcome.

Once there the rare disappointments will become monumental when they occur.

The trick is to keep it all in proper perspective & to learn to laugh at the occasional disappointments as they will always appear & pop up just to keep you in check & in your place.

It is one of the greatest games if not the greatest. As, CJ Wiley says, The Game Is The Teacher.

Let The Game teach you & find your place in the relationship with The Game & when it is played.

As to the 20 ounce cue, I do not know your size, etc. but you might want to move down an ounce at a time & find the lightest cue with which you can be comfortable. Just my opinion.

I found that I could always add power when ever I wanted to do so but there are some delicate shots where success is more conducive with a cue toward the light side. I sort of settled on 17 ounces but can play with a 15 ounce just as well. I guess it would also depend on what type of connection to the cue you have & what type of stroke you use.

Good Luck & Enjoy the Journey & 'Learn' as much as you can from as many sources as you can. But remember... you are your own individual & what may be right for one, may not be right for you. IMO much info that seems universal is really not when a human being is added to the equation.

Best Wishes,
Rick
