This guy seems to be ridiculously good.

I wouldn't have thought a Russian Billiards chmp would be anything special as I'm guessing the talent pool in that game is pretty small.

That game takes a tremendous amount of skill to pocket balls, and is very strategic. So, to be their champion lends itself to pyramid strategy-heavy games like 8-ball and 1-pocket.

Plus, Stalev has spent a good amount of time in the states, playing lotsa American Pool.

A little about him like I did. He is pretty interesting. There are some videos of him playing Russian Billiards on youtube also. Has won over 100 Russian Billiard events, and let me tell you those are BIG BALLS AND TIGHT POCKETS.
He comes from a little town about 30 miles outside of Moscow, and I know his father is very important to him. I suspect that he is highly intelligent.

I was impressed with him at Vegas. Only Russian in the tournament, and he makes the final 6.

I think he's a case of an exceptionally coordinated and physically talented guy, who happened to be born in Russia, where they play pyramids. Although he may be a product of a smaller talent pool than Filipino or Taiwanese or American players, he comes from a game of extreme accuracy (2.75" balls, 3.25" pockets!), and he's got a knack for cue ball control. Add to that a stunning power-break that utilizes every ounce of his diminutive frame, and consider the fact that tight pockets play right to his strength, and it's no huge surprise he's doing so well on the IPT.

But Andrew alot of Pyramids champions would meet those qualifications, at the risk of sounding corny, I think he's just special.

When i first saw him in Cardiff 5-6 years ago, i was told he spent a lot of time in the Phillipines, thus that pump stroke. I never did hear that again though.

Just wanted to let you know Evgeny was next to me at the Internet Station set up here at the tournament and I pulled him over to read this thread. He had a big smile on his face. He didn't have time to reply, but thanks anyway from him!

I HIGHLY recommend his match with Charlie Williams in the 2001 Derby 9 Ball. After watching that you will know all you need to know about the guy...dead stroke ;p I think Danny put it best when he said he is the Russian Efren. Great demeanor and talent!

Sorry man, this was one of the threads I didnt check out there. IM back now.

Anyway the bets were up and down and the usual tough losses. One night i had three players going at once and if any one of them wins, Im homefree and of course i lost all including a hill hill to complete an accumulator.

I was probably up a little til the finals where i went against Efren. Still i didnt get crushed and it was fun.

Maybe tomorrow, ill write up a few observations on the event.
