Test for ivory ferrule

Is there any simple way to test and see if a ferrule is really ivory? I have a shaft that I believe to have an ivory ferrule, but I don't know how to test for sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I've heard people say that you heat up the end of a pin and try to poke it into the "ivory". If it penetrates the material, it's not ivory.

But why would you do that to a ferrule and possibly create a problem. See a cue maker, you have a few near you.

A red hot pin will penetrate ivory or synthetic and it leaves an ugly mark. You do the test and you determine that it is ivory and now you have ivory that must be replaced because it has been damaged and is UGLY. I don't think that is too smart.

Any good cuemaker can tell the difference between ivory and synthetic because the two do not look the same.

On your next tip change. smell the fine dust that comes out of the face. :)
Unless it's padded of course.

That's what the pin test is for too....if it smells like burnt hair then it's ivory...however with a ferrule it would basically ruin it too....if you look REAL close you'll see the weave of fiber in it if it's synthetic....
