I watched one of Dr. Dave's video samples from the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots last week. The one that talks about the 30 degree rule for a ball with normal forward roll. I didn't think I would be able to apply it this soon, but I did last night!

So, I'm playing 8-ball. It's the playoff's and tensions are high. We've already lost our first match, I've already lost the first game of my match, and I end up with a shot on the 8 that is blocked in both directions to the corner pockets. For some reason I just see this shot, shoot the 8 into 13 and using the 30 degree rule it will carom off into the corner pocket. Looking like a complete dork, I go over and do the V thing (peace sign) with my hand over the 13 to figure out what the object ball (8-ball) path into the 13 needs to look like to come off it at a 30 degree angle. Everyone is looking at me like "What the hell is he doing?" Then I go back, address the cue ball, shoot into the 8, 8 goes off the 13, 8 goes center pocket, and there was much rejoycing.....

Ironically enough, when I got home I had my VEPS DVD's waiting for me in the mail.

I think the 30 degree rule is one of the most important rules in pool. I first heard about it from our own Fred Agnir who referred me to Dr. Dave's website. To say that it improved my safety play in one pocket is an understatment.

Sssssh, don't tell anyone. The GingerBread Man might be up for a one pocket race to 4 for $500 at Derby City Classic. If it got filmed, I would yell out "30 degree rule" every time I used it. On the other hand, I couldn't do that because it would get old very quick. :smile:

Thanks for the testimonial and shot example. I constantly look for 30-degree-rule "opportunities" at the table (like your example) when I play. When the angle is right, it's hard to miss.

I hope you like your newly-arrived VEPS discs. I almost done with Disc III (Safety Play and Strategy). I'll post an update when it's ready.
