My daughter who still lives in Dallas with her family came over.
We shared a big turkey dinner, gravy ,dressing, pumpkin pie

I spent the whole day with the grandchildren, one of them a
9 year old boy found my old Bobby Avila glove from the 60s
then he had me pitch to him while he murdered pitch after pitch,
I was living again

Next thing you know I taught him how to play checkers,he caught right
on,not just the moves but the strategy,he could see that if he moved
here i might
force him to jump me and then I would double jump him

He played game after game and slapped his head at every mistake
calling himself dumb boski

Some time back I took an 8 Foot Brunswick in trade so I gave it
to them, everyone in the family over there plays ,but I never play pool
with them, sometimes they tell him he can go to the pool hall with grandpa ,
but that day will never come

The seedy side of pool stolid my heart and I don't want to take the chance
that it will get his too. Sure there were some players who took up pool
and were fascinated by the game, straight pool,or 3 cushion or English snooker

These guys have class, there is something different about them, something
wholesome, friendly, healthy, and honest. The game for the games sake

I tell myself I am going to be like them,I don't need the money,I tell myself I will
play 14:1,so I set up tthe balls and begin to play, practice

This last for a long time maybe 2 minutes on a good day,I can't make a ball
then like a kid my imaginary friend comes in and says I will giive you 5 tries to run 15

"Make it 10 and I will bet you $1000 a game I reply"

I can't even practice without action,and suddenly I run the first 16,then I know

I am $1000 winner so I fall in dead stroke,
I am free wheeling ,I jack the bet and now I run 15 every 3 racks it's a whole
new game,I just see the balls going in

You think I want a young kid tobe hooked on a game like that, the thought of him
winning that first $1000 on a bar table, and then the wasted hours of chasing
a dream that becomes a nightmare

It started out as Thanksgiving, and we had plenty to be thankful for, least among
all the blessings I enjoy is seeing that wholesome family and knowing that little
fella is going to be a doctor,a lawyer,a chemist like his dad,

You wouldn't change a thing and I know it.

Doctor, lawyer, yeah sure. I know a few of those guys and none of them can
run three balls, We met, hung around with and even became good friends
with some of the best players in the world. Name in other sport that a couple
of Oak Cliff Tx, ragamuffins, could have done that with. We had adventures
and knew characters that most people only read about. My wife of 48 yrs.
came to Dallas from a small town in south Tx. After a date, it was around midnight,
I decided to show her what a classy guy I was and took her to Times Square
Pool Room. She asked "will they still be open". I said "they never close, but
we might be a little early". San Jose Dick was playing Gene Nagy, and they
were into their second day. Every gangster, heister, and hustler in town was there.
She's talking to all of them none stop, and not missing a thing. At day break
Pam,Stanley, and I went down stairs for breakfast. On the way back to her
place, she says wow I have never seen anything like that, it was like a movie,
and Stanley is a nice guy, I like him, what does he do for a living. I told her
he was Alf Taylors part time babysitter, which was true. This was Stanley Cook
The Creeper, Dixie Mafia Chief and hit man. He was later shot and killed at a bar
the Lemon Twist in Dallas. Now Dean, if you had been a Doctor what kind
of stories would we be sharing. Oh yeah I once removed this guys spleen
by mistake. The thing I would change is that one 9 ball I missed, I should have
banked it, and I would have put you at shortstop.

Had a great day also.

Tonight my kids and grand kids will be over for our traditional Friday after Thanksgiving turkey soup dinner. My wife makes a killer turkey soup that simmers from morning until evening.

My 9 year old grand daughter will sleep over and at noon tomorrow she and I will be racking them up at the poolroom.

Good times.
