That 1 damn mistake

Tonight I was playing perfectly in a local tourney until I made 1 mistake that cost me the match and sent me home. I was playing perfect position, pocketing balls no problem, didn't miss a shot, until I had a rattler in the pocket. Even on that missed ball I was perfect on the eight. My opponent ran out, like all our 1-2 inning games had been played. In a race to two he got me the first game, I won the second, and was almost out on the third when this happened.

I don't know what else to do when you are playing well, get 1 bad break, and lose the match as a result.

In similar situations in the past, 1 missed ball or a bad leave could mean the entire match with a momentum shift like that. I know these are just mental errors, is there any type of drill or training I can utilize to lessen these errors?

The one tongiht killed me, after making a beautiful full table bank through traffic, straight in on my last ball then the 8, and it rattles!!!!

Gosh!!!

This makes me feel better. I lost a hill hill 9-ball battle in a handicapped tounie this way once.:D :D

You were playing perfectly, until you narrowly missed a shot.

You can always decrease the chance of it happening by.. being better. But nobody's perfect, don't beat yourself up over it.

As for it costing the game, well, that's just how pool is I guess. You can't win them all, and if you're playing a good opponent they'll punish you for your mistakes, just like you do for theirs.

But really, my best advice is still: Be Better
;)

The heartbreaker is when you do something like this playing 9-ball...run the rack and miss an 8 or 9...give em the game and then they SNAP THE 9BALL IN!!! Compounding things two-fold! Man that is really what frustrates me on dogging balls, especially playing someone you you can't make a mistake against. Then you really have to bear down to keep your head in it.

How bout this one.............Make a hero run out from the break playing 8-ball...........Get alittle tough on the 8, make it, but carom off a ball or two, and SCRATCH!

we all screw up

We all screw up a vital shot and an easy out. Everyone chokes now and then, that is life.

Jack Nicklaus was asked once, did you ever 3 put a final green when you needed a 2 putt to win. He said never. Some people went back and found out in fact Jack had done that 2 or 3 times, keep in mind the guy had played in 25 tourneys since 1960, scewing up 2 or 3 times out of 1075 times is still remarkable, especiall in golf you can get on some greens 30' away and can't stop the ball within 6' of the hole on your first putt.
They asked him again, he said never, then they told him the events he did it in, he replied firmly, it never happened. They said we have it on tape, you want to look at it, he said no, because it never happened and walked off.

My take on that is Jack so thoughly erased that bad thing from his mind than indeed it no longer exists in his memory banks so he is telling the truth, it did in his mind, never happen. When he now faces that same situation on a green, that bad event does not even pop up to cause him fear.

Here is how you deal with your screw up, first face the fact it was that. That is why they put erasers on the end of pencils.
The next day, shoot just that shot, over and over. I don't care if it was a 2' straight in shot, shoot it as pennance at least 100 times in a row. I've seen old timers come in and do that 500 times in a row, hour after hour shooting the same damn shot, I would walk up and ask, what are you doing. The guy would say, I missed a easy shot on the out ball last night and went home broke. I ain't never gonna miss that shot ever again.

Once you have grooved this shot into your head, then erase the unhappy event from your memory banks like you do when a girlfriend tells you to drop dead, never think about it ever again.

Yes, this is a lot of work, but yes, this method does work. I am now writing a book and I have a ton of stuff along this area I may begin to put up if people want to see it.

I run the Power Source Pool School and we try to teach the mental side of the game along with the mechanical side of the game together as one.:)

I believe this happens too often, make a difficult shot just to miss an easy one. Makes one look fairly idiotic, IMO. But I’m guilty too.

One thing you could do is take some additional time after pocketing a difficult shot. Before shooting the easy straight in one, let the excitement pass and then refocus on the next shoot. Try chalking the cue with the opposite hand, walk around the table or maybe just exhaling.

FL good to see you back and that is good advice, thx.

Thanks king for the tap tap. It's so good to be back. I had a couple of guys trying to take me out and it got so bad it was agreed I go into a temporary exile until it was over. I have them off of my back and I pray that unfortunate incident is over and does not return. You know I had 200 postive posts on az before the ccb board crashed and those guys came over here and went to work on me. That is how it all went down.

I did not deal with that very well and for that I am very sorry. All I can do now is say to any one I offended or made mad, find it in your heart to now accept my humble apology and accept when I say I am sorry it comes from my heart. I pray I can continue to post and to pass on the many things my teachers have given to me. I have a half century of acquired knowledge, I can help a lot of players with solid answers that do work and get results. I pray I will be allowed to do that here without people messing with me or running down my teaching credentials which are as strong as any one else on this board.

My only goal here is to make as many friends as I can and to be a polite gentleman and conduct my self in a professional manner.
I am on the high road from now on, never ever again, will I allow anyone to drag me down into a gutter fight that I can never possibly ever win. You can't win every fight, but if you pick your fights well, you can. You should only fight if you can win and it's worth fighting over. None of this silly stuff on these boards is worth fighting over to be honest with you.

My name, my reputation, my records and my ability to continue to work in my chosen field were all under attack, that became personal and very serious. I suffered enormous damage from that, yes, many will say it was self inflicted and many of them are partially right about that I guess. What else can I do but come back and try it one more time and hope I get it right this time. :D

There is definately a recognizable difference in your tone and candor. I am gald to have you back because this forum as a whole is only as good as every member within. You are a valued member.

KingCarem,
I feel your pain.. I played Larry Nevel this weekend in the Viking event in Columbus. I run the first rack to the 9, leave myself perfect and dog a straight in shot. I would make it 100% of the time practicing. Made me sick and he made it hurt real bad.
I ended up losing 7-3 and sent me packing.
The important lesson is to learn from it. I did not feel as if I was set when lining up but shot anyway. I let the fact that I was playing a high caliber professional get in my head. Keep on going, you will work it out.

Good luck

Thanks on being back

Oh yes King, any chain is only as good as it's weakest link, and that one apple that's bad in the barrel soon takes out the barrel which is what has happened to the ccb board, too many rotten apples in their barrel.

All this board has to do is self police its self, if it does that, then nobody even has to run to Mike and ever bother him again. When people get out of hand and off on a negative attack that serves no real purpose, all that needs to be done is for 2 or 3 people of courage to jump and and say stop that, take it off the board and on the pm's. I love this board and 99% of the people on it. It is a upscale board for upscale people. If you want to get trashed, then go over to the cesspool ccb board, they will be happy to throw mud on you every time you say something they disagree with.

King, I am going to make a positive contribution here this time around, bank on it. I will not allow any one to distract me from that goal. One of the ccbers has already teed off on my on the side bar million dollar thread calling me a liar. Here we go again, but this time around, I am not going to engage. It takes two to tango and I no long tango amigos. Hast La Vista, Baby Wally in Cincy. :D

Runarak, sorry to hear about that.

I guess it is why we feel great when we didnt make that 1 little mistake, played perfectly, and won.

Here is the bottom line on this thread, eveyone chokes, everyone dogs a out ball, c'est la vie.
Mosconi choked, Tiger chokes, yes they are rare, but they do choke. When you choke, do not make it a big thing, you will do better the next time is what you tell your self then let it go.:D
