That Timmy Scruggs "PING"

I've hit with 4-5 Scruggs, from SP to fancy ivoried-out creations, and they all had this very distinctive "ping" to them (all cues were piloted, btw). I've hit with one sneaky pete by an unknown maker that had this ping as well (though that one is a 3/8-10 flatfaced).

If you know what I'm talking about, what do you think attributes to this particular kind of hit? I'm not sure if I like it or not, but I do know it's a very unique feedback from the cue. I play with a predator shaft, and on whatever kind of joint configuration the hit is pretty dull (but quite solid).

Thanks,
Roger

I'm not quite sure what other characteristics might lead to the "pinging" but I do know the tip is one thing that will ping. I've had this problem with a Le Pro tip and I can't stand it. Switched to Moori Medium and everything is good.

Change the tip

Yep.. sounds like the tip is ready to come off or possibly a cracked ferule. My cheap pioleted cue goes "thunk" when I hit whitey. A Nick Varner SP.

It might be the ring you are wearing in your grip hand. LOL
Melamine ferrules make that pinging sound too.

no no no, this is not a bad tip, or a glue failure anywhere; this is how the cue hits. I think I like it, not enough for me to switch but it's a pleasant sound/feeling. I'm sorry I can't describe it better, the best I can do is say what came to mind at the time and it's "PING!"

lol, I wear no rings, and if I do they would surely come off before I handle a cue!

I'm guessing it's the ferrules too, though maybe the way they're threaded and not the material per se. Of course, I know nothing about construction, so that's just an uneducated guess.

It probably just needs a new shooter.

i've had a bad experience with wearing rings on grip hand. Fkin tore my wrap apart like i hit it with the ginsu in 5 minutes.

Were the forearms of the cues all MAPLE? I have had some maple that will make a distinct sound almost like a ping.
