The accidental shark

Funny story...somewhat relevant. I was playing a guy 5 ahead 9-ball for $400. We both play pretty sporty, each stringing three racks a couple times during the set. When either of us would get an easy 9, or even an easy last two, we would hop up and rack the balls. We always EXPECT to shoot the ball unless told not to. One time he left himself a long straight in 9 ball. He shot it and missed. He was fine with it, but his buddy, a little trash-talking A-Hole who can't play at all, got pissed off at me for not conceding the game. This little guy wanted to start a fight with me. I asked the owner of the pool room (the guy I was playing) to have the guy leave, and he did. From now on I will only play the guy if his buddy isn't allowed in the pool room:)

The question was not should I have conceded the game.I readily admitted I had a pretty serious mental malfunction and it should have been conceded. My opponent would hear none of that (known him for years) so we settled on a "do over".

The question was:

Has anyone ever effected the the play at the table by being careless (or otherwise stupid in my case) when it wasn't your turn at the table?

I figured I share a rather shameful experience of my own to get the thread going was all.

on my part, in a tournament....NO ! in a friendly match, YES ! :D

in a friendly match, It don't really matter. but in a tournament, I always observe proper demeanor and make sure that I'll be able to hit properly even when I had a lil to drink and I don't disturb my opponent in the process ! ;)

This ball was money imo so I did (without thinking) what I would do in most instances.... I went to retrieve balls and concede the game.

As this exact moment, you have lost the game.... end of story.

I've had numerous occasions in which I'm shooting at 90% makeable 9-ball or 8-ball and have had my opponent (usually a player fairly new to the game) make the initial move to the table to rack the next rack....

At this point I stop and ask the person if they have conceeded the game.... they always say "Huh? No.".... so I then ask when they made a move toward the table while I was still shooting? If they don't know me, they of course think I'm a dick.

I've made this a rule to do now because in the past I blew a bunch of "sure things" and there isn't one thing you can say after you stroked the ball.

My friend Steve will SWEEP the balls to the foot of the table if his opponent stands up and walks toward the table. I've never seen anyone fail to recognize the justice of this action.

I sometimes find myself making moves toward the table when I think my opponent is likely to finish the game. Most times I'll catch myself and ask, "WTF do you think you're doing?" I'll occasionally concede a game before it's over, but not during league play or in a tournament. I did pick up a ball once when I scratched after making the 9 ball in a 9-ball game, forgetting that the 9 respots. Since it was APA, all was forgiven and the game continued.
