what exactly do you mean by "ivory joint pins"? Do you mean that the pin itself is actually made of ivory?! I mean, can that really be stable?

But what a great collection to have!

I think I have seen a photo of the pins and if I remember right, they ARE ivory. I am certain that makins this collection purely for show. Nothing wrong with that!

Masterful work!

While I understand your point, I would have to disagree with you there. To say that there is nothing wrong with building a cue "for show" is like saying that there's nothing wrong with building a beautiful, top of the line, Maybach or even a Bentley. Decked out in every way with ever emenity imaginable, then putting a weed-whacker engine in it.

I do not disagree that cues are a form of art but I do feel that it should be functional art.

Oh, I prefer functional cues (art) as well, but I see purely artistic cues as helping the industry as a whole by showing-off the skills of the cuemakers, thus getting more people interested in buying cues. It is just great for the industry to have show cues.

Ivory Pins

Yes they are ivory pins. I had the pleasure of seeing the display at the SBE 3 years ago. It's called the "Amboyna Collection". I don't know how functional they would be...but VERY aesthetically pleasing!. Check out
www.mcwortercues.com and you can see this collection and other cues built by Jerry. NICE! I think it sold for $25,000.00 or so??

The Ivory is much stronger then you would think and when screwed together tight there isn't much load on the pin, those cues are functional. You can play with them as well as break with them, I am not sure after spending that much for a group of cues that you'd like to play with them. But I can assure you the pin is the least of your problems, and I am sure if you bought them and a pin cracked or broke Jerry would stand behind it.

jerry made a statment that wood pins have been around scince the start of cue building and ivory is 8xs stronger!

Is there an advantage to using ivory pins vs. more traditional pin materials like steel or brass?

It was just about doing something different, making the cues really stand out, and because he could and it hasn't been done to often in the past. Just look at the attention a mention of it has done here.
