THE BEARD (or any good banker) HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS!?!?!?!?

Any of you familiar with this shot? I accidentally made it once, and have intentionally made it a few other times, but I am no where near consistant with it. Never seen it before, ran it by a few of the bankers down here, no one seems to know it.

CueTable Help

For those of you who know, what are the tips/tricks to making this shot, especially the spot you have to bank to make it go. I load this up with a ton of right and just try to get it to bank just above the tit, but as close to the tit as possible.
I might only make this shot 1:20 / 1:50 right now.

I know it's probably a useless bank, esp. with the 1 railer option, but I'm still dying to really get it down.

This is one of the banks I work on with my students that like to play One Pocket..

If you shoot this at the side pocket, you'll notice that it must be hit pretty darn hard. Like a 6-7-8 on a 10 scale. Shoot this a few times to get the speed down. You really do have to hit this hard or your object ball will not turn! Then try it on the corner pocket.

Note that if you hit it too soft, you'll get the result below. Try amping it up a notch, and you'll get the above:

CueTable Help

Applying this to the corner: I personally cannot make it with the ball frozen on the bottom rail - and have tried hundreds of times. I believe it is because of counter-acting rail crush.

However, if the ball is off the rail a bit (say 1/4 ball) I have a chance to make it, but then the cue ball is basically hitting the bottom rail at warp speed - so I tend to duck from fear ;)

Well, that's my take anyway.

Tom...You have this shot a little backwards. It is a standard trick shot for artistic billiards. You have to back cut the OB, not shoot straight at it (so you just move the CB slightly to the left of the OB in your diagram). NO english is necessary, contrary to what is shown in the trick shot book (they say you have to shoot it with inside spin). You're correct on the speed of the shot though. The trick, as Denny showed in his one rail bank, is to back cut the OB with draw and at just enough angle to clear the side pocket tit (the cut is what puts the spin on the OB, so that it banks backwards). Then the OB will bank three rails, back across the opposite side pocket. This shot can be made one rail, two rails, and three rails. I shoot the three rail shot most often. I've not seen the shot played as AZE diagrammed it, and I'd have to agree with you, about the rail crush issue. Willie Jopling taught me this shot almost 15 years ago, and I shoot it in every trick shot show.

Okay, this thread is derailing a little too fast for me...

I am not asking how to one-rail it, I am not asking how to 3 rail it into the side pocket when it is in a completely different spot. I see how the side pocket shot and this relate, but after it's been referenced let's not turn this into a discussion about shooting it into the side.

This shot definitely goes. I guess I'll just have to figure it out on my own. WISH ME LUCK :)

I have seen this shot also AZE. You actually 2 rail it back to your pocket if Im correct. You have to use alot of inside english and cut the object ball into the short rail. The inside english throws it back towards your pocket. Its a very cool shot to see.

Actually, you can shoot it straight (as I diagrammed). No cut necessary, and no english either. The cut has no effect on this shot - it's all about the speed. The 2-railer is can be made straight on as well. But not the 1-railer. And, I wasn't referring to the trick shot, just applying the rail crush principle - which is a function of the object ball, and not the cue ball placement. That is, you can shoot it off angle, but, like I said, it makes no difference on this shot.

And AZE, in case I wasn't clear, the speed is the same on both shots. Once you get it down, you should be able to execute at the bottom rail. THat is, you need to be aware of the speed needed to execute the shot. Sorry if that was ambiguous. I don't want to argue the merits of the side pocket, other than to show how speed can mess up the corner pocket shot.

Back in 91-93 when i was at the pool room all day everyday in vegas, i often saw all the top 1P players fireing this shot in 3 rails like it was a hanger, Rex Cannon was in poor health at the time and he would do it all the time kinda -just showing off. I think he had a cool 2 rail shot as well I cant remember any more it was long ago.

I believe its in his banks that dont go but do dvd will look at it later & let you know[working night shift]. you play at hollywood? do you look like your avatar? there is a guy there that loks like your avatar thought it might be you. if so i think you play at beyond also. anyway will let you know. try this for now level cue rail first quite a bit of inside english.

Not to hi-jack the thread...
Fatboy, could the 9 ball be the 2 rail shot your thinking of?

AZE... I've never done the corner pocket shot (2, or 3 rails)... I've only done the side. If you look at the distance the cueball travels when I make this shot... it might give you a better idea of how hard to hit the ball.

I feel that it's pretty much the exact same shot... but a different pocket. When I do the side pocket shot I aim for about a 1/2 diamond left and aim to hit the OB full face with a tiny bit of outside english on the CB... Maybe about a 1/2 tip south, and a full tip, at the very most, of outside english.

Good luck AZE, and good question on this shot, I've always thought about making it in a different pocket but never tried.

edit: Doesn't look right on my screen, but hopefully it looks right on everyone else's screen, I can't fix it.

AZE I think that your question was answered fairly well. Although there is some disagreement on whether or not you need a little inside spin on the cueball, you certainly do want to hit it with a little draw / deadball to maximize the grip the cueball gets on the object ball.

The side pocket shot analogy is a good one I think.

I saw Brian Gregg win the bank ring game last year(I think) with this exact same shot. Blew my mind, because he called the shot(as per rules). I know the 3-times across shot in the side, but never saw this one.

Lot's of 1-hole players shoot this shot. Two things I can see wrong with your diagram. First, it looks like the OB is frozen to the rail. As far as I know, it needs to be just a little off the rail in order to cut it high enough. Second, the contact points where it hits the rail the first and third time should be reversed. Shoot it with a just a little low inside english, cut it higher up, and hit it harder than you think you should. With a little practice it becomes easier than it looks. Hope that helps some.

The shot is a 4 rail shot, not 3. Its hit into the short rail (hard) and starts backing up when the english takes on the 2nd long rail. The english comes from the contact with the end rail and the speed keeps it from taking when it hits the 1st long rail. Hit it slower and it can be a 3 rail shot.

Not a 1P shot.

Check it out on the DVD

I shoot this exact 4 rail shot and 3 more similar variations, (2 rails, 3 rails, etc.) on my DVD, Banks That Dont Go, but Do. You can view the video clip of the 2 rail version, and how to shoot it, by clicking on, http://dvdpreviewclips.blogspot.com/ The ball is FROZEN, and NO ENGLISH fellas.

I posted my pool movie screenplay, "Roxanne's Game," in serial form on my website. Scene l and scene ll are available for perusing on this link: www.scriptforroxannesgame.blogspot.com/ It's loosely based on the road adventures of Jack and Barbara C**ney, and a few others.
