I would really appreciate if you could give me your valuable input on which leather wrap you think would look the best with the curly maple stained with a golden oak stain.

We are currently using brown lizard print.

Thank you so much.

I believe the second cue from the top (2nd picture = brn lizard) looks the best and if all of the rings and joint were black it would even look even better :)

(white for light colored wood and black for darker wood)

I like the bottom wrap the best but I dont like that stain at all. Curly Maple is one of my favorite woods for building cues and I only stain with colors for effect such as red or blue or green. When making a cue with Maple I will often stain with fruit wood or golden oak and immediately wipe it off and then sand the wood again removing all stain other than what is in the rings so that they stand out more.

Thank you for the feedback. I also have done a few others with smooth leather, tiger leather (brown and black pig skin that I stained myself), and a white leather. But since I am leaning towards using more exotic looking leather, I decided to post these four options here.

By the way, the white leather was the hardest to do, is it just me? I dyed the rims and edges of the blank with white shoe polish, but still, the seam was so hard to hide.

We may introduce a natural curly maple X breaker soon, or one with another stain, but we are not sure yet.

Thank you everyone.

i voted for black lizard before i knew there was a picture..lol..

anyways. the black and the brown lizard both look awesome on the cue...

My .02 cents

I personally like the Brown wraps best, they blend with the cue better. The biggest problem, IMO, is the white rings with the golden color of stain. I think a ring of a brownish color, darker than the golden color, but with hint of goldish color would highlight the cues better. Perhaps coco with an appropriate stain color, or kingwood.

Other than ebony/ivory cues, cues that have too much contrast to them tend to look like 50-60's type houses with the old dark woodwork with white walls, and that is passe'. Later on, oak woodwork came into popularity, along with rises of earth tones to complement it.

You need to 'Earth tone' the cues some for a richer look.

I second that.

Same. I voted brown since there wasn't a brown/black option.

Cant go wrong with either lizard IMO.
Wish my "restored" Espiritu was that nice, the seam on it is driving me nuts.

While the white at the joint and butt cap looks nice, I could live without it above and below the wrap area.

I think you should experiment with black and natural plenolic rings, collars, and buttcaps as well.

I'll second that.

He put a textured Black leather wrap on a cue he made for me and I still have a hard time finding the seam and it's been a year.

I personally think Ernie G. and Ed Prewitt does the best leather wrap. As a matter of fact, if I really have to choose only one, I would have to say Ed.

I have never seen Dan's leather wrap job. I have seen his cues and they are beautiful!

In all fairness, there are so many leather wrap jobs by so many cue makers that I have never seen, so my opinion is really nothing but my personal opinion.

When I see Dan next time, I will have to check out his leather wrap.

I will try to put a white leather wrap on the curly maple X Breaker next week. I also have a piece of boar, a piece of Ostrich, and Kagaroo(spelling?).

I enjoy doing leather wrap, it is actually something I can sit down and do all day. I guess I need a life.:)

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
