'The Color of Money' ...it's a perplexing title. I finally got it:

WRONG,WRONG AND WRONG !!!!!
Martin asked Tom "what should we call this movie?"
Tom replied,well.........My friend JERRY MAGUIRE was on a MISSION and found it IMPOSSIBLE to live off drinking RAIN,MAN.To think of water as a COCKTAIL.
To TOP the throat off and GUN the water down ones throat was RISKY and not a good BUSINESS venture for the FEW GOOD MEN involved.Considering the current WAR on water prices OF THE WORLDS demand.
In the LAST few hundred years the SAMURAI sword would cut the nutrients from the melon.

Anyway,Its hard to tell the story if no one understands......So martin thought since he cant come up with a COLOR and looked at Tom and thought this guy is nothing but" MONEY".

I know,I was there.

Did you see Cruise in Magnolia or Born on the Fourth of July? He was nominated (but didn't win) an academy award for those two roles and I thought he did a great job in both. I also liked him in Jerry Maquire. Maybe not one of the very top actors in terms of acting ability, but he's done well in several roles IMHO. I got to hang around some of the shooting of Rain Man and thought he learned a lot from Hoffman during the filming. In fact, I think he owes much of his acting skill to some of the actors and directors he has been lucky enough to work with.

Are you saying that the Inside Pool Mag review may have had to report that......"The diminutive scientologist hobbled out of the room with 2/3rds of a balabushka protruding from his starfish" ??:)

You know, I'll be one of the first ones on the "I hate Tom Cruise" wagon, but, even as silly as he was in that movie with the twirling the cue and the obvious just learned bridge........he was the reason for a huge pool boom that got our sport some recognition back in the mid 80's. I gotta at least give the movie credit for that and the average Joe probably wouldn't have watched it without Cruise being in it.

Exactly...we need another TCOM to come out right now...

Of course the movie is about hustling and winning money, but the color of money is: Green. Fast Eddie is imeadiately jealous (green with envy) of Vincent at hearing his first "sledghammer" break. The green envy continues and Felson uses it to come out of hiding and try to become great again.

Also, Felson uses Vincent's insane JEALOUSY of his girlfriend to good measure also. In fact, John Turturro as Julian, is very jealous of Vincent's talents, and the fact that Felson is stake horsing him.

Ahhhhhh haaaaaaaaa!:D

Felson quit the game as it brought back memories of all the happenings in, "The Hustler" movie past. Eddie accepted his fate for years in a dead end job simply keeps his head above water. Then his chance meeting with Vince opens up a new chapter in his life.

Felson sees great potential in a kid that's doing everything laughingly wrong. He knows that there is no harm at showing the kid the ropes. Especially in that Felson wouldn't take it 'too far' as Bert did. As he shows the kid the ropes the old love of the game becomes overpowering. At the same time the frustration mounts as Vincent seemingly can't grasp his wisdom.

Believing the kid just don't understand what he's trying to teach Felson conceives a plan for them to part ways and for him to get back in the game.
Losing to Forrest Witakers character in front of Vincent and Carmen convinces them its all over.

On the flip side is Vincents character. Lacking only a stake horse he is looking to take his show on the road. A seemingly raw talent he uses Felson to win enough cash to become an independent road player himself.

In summary it becomes a story of who's zooming who. Felson fakes his real speed to Vincent, and Vincent hides his as well under the flaky bar hustler facade.

In the final showdown we never know just who the better player is.

Many different interpretations can be made of this movie...

Enjoyed the green theory. One small hitch: the movie title is taken from the Walter Tevis novel, which unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective) had nothing to do with a character named Vincent or hustling or pretty much anything that appeared in the movie. Kind of like the Bourne movies vs the Ludlum novels.

Robert

Like he said. name comes from the book. and there is no vince in the book. not that great of a book anyway. Huster was better

Not exactly...Eddie understands the "sound" of Vincent's break, and immediately thinks about how he can 'cash in' on it...it's NOT jealousy at all!

The green envy continues and Felson uses it to come out of hiding and try to become great again.

Again...envy has nothing to do with it. Eddie originally has no intention of 'coming out of retirement'. He's already made a pile of money in the booze biz. His angle is making $$$ steering Vincent! Only after he's back in the mix a little, does he think about "coming back" himself!

Also, Felson uses Vincent's insane JEALOUSY of his girlfriend to good measure also. In fact, John Turturro as Julian, is very jealous of Vincent's talents, and the fact that Felson is stake horsing him.

Julian is not jealous of Vincent's skill...he is angry that Eddie dropped him flat, in favor of backing Vincent. Of course, part of it is that Julian is a doper, and Vincent is the clean cut "virgin"...that nobody knows...which is the REAL reason for Eddie's interest, in the first place!

Ahhhhhh haaaaaaaaa!:D

Don't take my word for it, (especially on Fast Eddie Felson) but lets' read the review from THE NEW YORK TIMES:

"Oscar-nominated in 1961 for his performance as pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson in The Hustler, Paul Newman won that award a quarter century later when he reprised the role in The Color of Money. At the end of The Hustler, Felson was banned for life from playing the game professionally. In the intervening years, he has become what the despicable George C. Scott was in the 1961 film: a front man for younger hustlers, claiming the lion's share of the winnings. His latest "client" is arrogant young Tom Cruise, who is goaded into accepting Felson's patronage by his avaricious girl friend Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Cruise learns not only the refinements of the game, but also the dirty trickery that will help him lure in the suckers. As Cruise becomes successful on these terms, Felson seethes with jealousy, hitting the bottle and carelessly allowing himself to fall victim to another hustler. He tells Cruise to get lost, and vows to make an honest comeback. It is inevitable from this point onward that the younger and the older player will square off in a game for the biggest stakes of all: Fast Eddie Felson's self-respect. Both the original Hustler and The Color of Money were based on novels by Walter Tevis. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The fine points are debatable, but certainly not the overiding jealousy in the film. And Julian is totally Jealous of Vincent, yes he is mad at Felson for leaving him, but that is part of the jealousy.

Another Jealous moment in the film is the "Two brothers and a Stranger"
con. Where Felson is all over Vincent's girl. Explosive jealousy.

As a side note - Cruise was initially taking lessons in pool by the late Jimmy Cattrano Jr. at his room in Rego Park, NY - (before Sigel became involved) - Cattrano was being considered for technical advisor - however, Paul Newman wanted Sigel as the advisor and they went along with Newman's choice - Jackson

Worst pool movie ever

Tom Cruise ruins every picture he's in. Any dude who came into my poohall and twirled his stick like a baton would be sent out the door on his knees.

Not that I have much respect for Scientology Boy as a person, but I feel I should remind you he was playing a part that was written that way (unrealistically).

And Pool Hall Junk was much worse.

No Sir, not at all. But, that question has been answered several times on this thread. However If you are buying,....:D

Balabushka...All that shows, is that the reviewer/writer didn't know what the heck he was talking about. Eddie was never jealous of Vincent, or his skill ( Eddie knew that he had been better in his own prime...after all he wiped the floor with Minnesota Fats, who was the king at the time). Watch the movie again...Eddie decided on his own (and was feeling pretty 'sporty') about going out and playing a little. For whatever reason (mostly his poor eyesight, and he wasn't drinking at ALL during this part of the movie), he got beat by a few locals, and one hustler (Forrest Whitaker)...and THAT pissed him off. It had nothing to do with Vincent. That's when he told them they didn't need him any more, and he had nothing left to teach them. Obviously the movie reviewer was NOT a poolplayer, and knew nothing about pool...gee, big surprise!:D Interesting to note that although he mentions that Newman was nominated (as was George C. Scott and Piper Laurie), he makes no mention that the movie itself won best picture...again, imo, an omission of ignorance. He did get the last line correct. Eddie & Vincent pair off in the end, with bragging rights (and $8K in an envelope) at stake. Not as good as the original, but imo, a fine remake!
