The color of the balls???

I'm a little confused about the colors of the balls used in televised tourneys like the WPM. Look at THIS and tell me how this makes it easier to tell what is what? I thought the purple 4 ball worked just fine.

It's a blurry grainy shot with the white balance not set properly.

It honestly is easier to spot pink and brown and red rather than dark 7 dark purple 4 black 8.

What do you expect honestly?

to be fair that seems to be a bad photo - everything has a red hue to it. look at the partypoker letters which are meant to be white for example.

It may have been from the ambient lighting in the room, not necessarily the photo - in which case, the ball colors are a bad selection.

I agree, if you have the color adjusted properly on your tv you should be able to tell the purple four apart from the other balls. But nobody asked me and once something like this gets started you will never change it.

I never really had trouble distinguishing the balls when I used to watch matches on TV before they switched to the new colors. I'm actually still having a hard time with the new colored balls since I'm so used to seeing the old traditional colors. I have to keep reminding myself what the pink colored ball actually is.:o

When taking a picture in low fluorescent lighting like this, special considerations must be made if you want to keep colors true. I'd guess this was a normal hobby photographer with a standard camera on auto settings. On a TV quality video camera the colors would not be as shown here.

I sometimes get confused with #3 & 5 when watching on tv...

Maybe then can introduce neon colors :D

Hello junksecret,

sorry but I didn't read this thread up until today.

Did you take the picture with your personal gear? I saw the Exifdata and found that the camera's WB was set to "auto" which is optimized to work for standard lighting situations.

If the lighting is Tungsten, setting the camera to the "Bulb"-symbol is generally a good idea. If the lighting is made of something else like neon bulbs, I suggest that you do a manual white balance. This sounds complicated, but is quite easy.

First, set the camera to "auto-WB". Take a hankie and make it half-transparent by pulling off some of the layers. Hold it in front of your lens and point the camera at the main light. You should get a picture which shows nothing but a uniformly colored area. It is perfectly normal that this picture is not white but yellow-brown or even green.

Now set the camera to "manual WB" and tell it to accept this picture as the reference for white-balancing. The camera will now know what colour "should look white" on the picture. From now on it should give neutral color rendition as long as the light doesn't change.

Some hints for using a flashlight in large rooms: http://www.rackow-fotodesign.de/Lee/ (However, using a flash even with low power is probably not allowed during a tournament)

Thats a terrible picture. To top it off, the balls are in motion adding a blur. I personally prefer the tv balls. That's also what I bought and will be using on my home table.

I hate it when they use the regular colors these days. I never can tell the difference between the 2 and 4. I wish TAR would break down and buy a set of tv balls.

I think the color on the TV screen needs to be adjusted. I'm not too thrilled about that damn pink 4 ball either, but honestly, it is easier to tell it from the 8 on televised matches.
