Oh crap ... just realized I mistitled this thread. I meant, of course, The Death Scratch
Hate to confess that I've been banging balls longer than most posters on this board have been alive. But through all these years there remains once scratch that drives me wild.

I've pretty well figured out scratches in the corner pockets. But when I scratch in the side after hitting the end rail inside the first diamond, hat drives me wild.

I can't even shoot the ball in from that spot with my cue. And yet it fires straight into the hole.

And it goes into the side pocket at the slowest speeds and also the fastest speeds.

I once had an opponent asks why I fired an OB into the side pocket from a tough angle... my reply... "When the cue ball is traveling that fast, it always goes in...!!!!
 
I have named this shot, the 'impossible' scratch. Whenever my opponent goes crazy after experiencing the shot, I always tell them....."You only have to do it 2 million more times, to catch up with me."

Add me to the list of completely confused and flabbergasted folks who have experieced this more than their fair share. It is endlessly frustrating. Paul, I think you said it best when you said that you can't even shoot the ball in from that spot. Sad but true.
 
This is certainly a bad roll, that is for sure. Maybe it's bareak for the other guy, to pay for the breaks I've been given. There really are some POOL GODs & they contro the rolls.

In actuality, a ball can be made in the side from 1.5 diamonds from the side rail.

Not true. On some shots with top spin cb can be made from 0.5 diamond, because travels in curved line... This sh*t happened to me on hill-hill match
so i remember very well :rolleyes:

In the last 3 months, I have been suffering scratches in the side pockets off the end rail after a slight graze off another ball. Verry maddening since at the time of setup, there was no conceivvable way for the CB to end up in that poket.

{That is: I understand...}

I swear it would require a masse shot in order to scratch from some of the angles I've seen. Gotta be that damned Simonis cloth!
 
A buddy of mine has scratched from inside the first end rail diamond several times. I know because we were playing each other. He thinks its impossible but as we know it happens. I rarely scratch that way because I avoid hitting close to the side pocket. We all have caught the point, which is real close to a possible scratch. It is pretty amazing so death scratch seems an appropriate. It wasn't your day! lol

Out here in Downeast Maine where I come from, dontcha know, if you was to say "deah scratch" the response would be "scratch where, deah?" :p
 
Heh, there is a video out there (maybe Dr. Dave's website or was it VEPS?) where the guy curves the cue ball into the side pocket from an impossible angle by "swooping" his arm during the shot. I rewound that video about 20 times asking myself how the heck he managed to make that shot. It wasn't until the 21st time I viewed it and didn't rewind it when he finally says "haha, I was using a trick ball that is weighted on one side to curve into the pocket."

Even with a regulation cue ball, I swear I've made that shot when I didn't want to though. :) Dang whitey defies physics!
