We have 8,9,10, straight pool, one pocket, etc. These are the classic games. These are great games. Why are TV producers constantly looking for the TV game?
Honestly as a serious pool player, I think all the great games are best watched in the summary format, for most people.
The thing which we need is to move to more of a challenge format IMHO. Basically the great style of yesteryear. 10 player world championships in straight pool to enough balls that run outs are all but impossible. Then show like 4 hours of summary of the week of play on ESPN or elsewhere.
Add to that, great challenge matches covered on a full web stream or in summary format on TV. Ideally, we can create super names by the end of the year to make the top 10 for the championship match.
Basically, my idea is to make a super 10 person tournament which is filled by people who win the regionals and do well in challenges. The challenges get top players to local pool rooms playing their challenge matches. This gets people watching. It creates big name heros like boxing.
Summary formats to TV and full stream online. Gambling full bore on these matches online, where available, etc.
Heros, gambling, challenge short tours, a truely elite proven pool athlete to follow, interaction with the fans in the local challenge events, . . .what more could we need?
Right now, it is hard to get my kids into pool. There is not a clear, exciting way to follow pool. On top of that, it is played in bars! They need a touchable hero to go see in a local challenge match.
