I recently competed in two week end double elimination "Open" tournaments in Anchorage with a field of about 45 players each time. I wish I could say I fought the good fight, but I got my butt beat down early by better shooting players.
The first was 9 Ball race to 9 on winner side and race to 7 on looser side. The second week end was 8 Ball race to 6 on winner side and 5 on looser side with last six matches on looser side a race to 6 again.
The tables were 9' Diamonds with a few playing early rounds on 7' Diamonds. Good tables with good 860 HR Tournament Blue cloth and good Arimath balls. Nice long races for amateurs with good equipment. I felt fortunate as I keep hearing from my buddy in Michigan about brutal short bar box races in most of their amateur tournaments.
I won my first match in each one easily thanks to a lucky draw. Had my chances in some of the other matches and missed the shots. I just could not get it together.
I am going to work on my stroke as I miss way to many long straight in shots when I try to use medium or faster speed on the shots, especially when applying draw.
All in all the tournament was well run and attended by a bunch of players who showed pretty good sportsmanship. Some one must of complained to the authorities as there was no Calcutta on the 8 Ball, it may be a thing of the past.
I had fun and will try again in about 7 months.
