The great debate; what do YOU prefer for a break-cue, ultra lite or ultra heavy?

Are you referring to THIS one? Looks like the heaviest they have for it is 21 oz.

Just wanted to add that after my experiment with the Players I got a Mezz Power Break II.......that thing is one powerful break cue.
Borrowed a friend's BK3 and never could warm up to it but it was love at first sight with the Mezz PB2.
Love that shorter cue, forces you to choke up on the grip and come in just a little closer.

I have always like a heavier break cue until recently. I bought a OB Rift break cue and it's much lighter then my playing Cue. My playing Cue is 19.75 and my new break cue is 18.50. I actually seem to be breaking much better now with the lighter cue. I think it's just I can accelerate the cue much easier than the heavier break cues that I once had.

I don't think I will ever go back to a heavier break cue.
Ditto!!! sold my Thor's Hammer...bought a 15 ounce Action. Threw a Samsara tip on that cost half as much as the cue. Never going back to heavy!!!

Not ultra light but lighter for sure, around 18 oz., suits my break style and mechanics.

Lighter

I have a Mobley Brumstick and it's 15.3 and hits a ton. It must be the shaft and taper...I think Randy knows what he's doing 😀 The only thing is not overstroking and letting the cue do the work, hard to control at first.

25oz Rage Sneaky Pete, can't get anything to drop on break with a lighter stick & am just used to a sledgehammer for breaking now.

I like my break cue to be the same weight as my playing cue.

Hence, I use my playing cue.

To be honest, I'd love to have only one cue but I love a soft top on my shooting cue and a very hard, maybe even phenolic tip on my breaking cue.

See this is where one of my problems is, I have a very long reach/arms so a short cue may make not difficult for me. How short are we talking, less than 57"?

As many have said its personal preference. I am breaking with a custom Jacoby jump/break three piece butt thats 4 inches short and weighs 16 oz., my playing cue is a Jacoby that weighs 18.5 oz..
Try some of the other leagues players break cues and find what weight works best for you. I have tried my friends 25 ounce cue didn't care for it,

Yes it's less than 57. They took four inches off a 58 inch cue.
I'm 6' 3" and have long arms.

The other thing I like about the Mezz PB II is that if you want it heavier you can add weight in the middle of the butt portion.
Not in the back like so many cues have it.
So this cue just gets heavier or lighter, straight down. Not with all the weight in the last few inches, just putting more weight in your stroke hand.

Read about the argument as to why they did it.

I have no way to prove if it's right or wrong but I do know it's the best and the most powerful break cue I've tried so far.
And that's probably a combination of things. One is the tip. I love the original tip.
A close second is the Mezz Kai. It's also amazing.

Years ago, I believe it was Billiard Digest ran an article on what weight break cue generated the most cue ball speed. I think Robert Bryne was involved.

They got a bunch of top pros together, took the end rail off a Brunswick 9 footer, set up a radar gun and let 'em have at it with different weight cues. I believe the cues were from 15 to 23 ozs.

Overall, the most consistent, fastest break speeds were done with cues weighing in at around 17 1/2 ozs.

Take from this what you want,

I played with a lighter break-cue but got problems with a tennis elbow because of the speed. So now I am playing with a heavier one (19,5 oz). My problems are almost gone because I can hit the break with less speed. So I have not really a choice :-))

Good to know, thanks.

Speed is great but doesnt by itself result in a great break. For me I need 3 results from a break - make a ball - good spread - cue ball control. (you need a solid full hit for all 3) Whether I get that from a 14 mph break or a 24 mph break, I dont care. I used to use a $360 17 oz break cue with phenolic tip and am now using a 25 oz $80 cue with a Samsara hard leather tip. I also use a $80 18 oz cue with phenolic tip. I sold the $360 cue.

I still dont know which I prefer, I am working on cue ball control with a good spread.
Work in progress. Good luck. I would not spend a bunch of money on a cue for breaking though. Get a tip you like and work on technique.

Thanks.

I didn't expect this thread to blow up like this but so far it's about 40/40% with 5% not using a break cue and 15% liking the same weight as those playing cue.

A light break stick might be okay for a really good player but for us bangers I'd go heavy so you don't
have to swing as hard. Just remember there is a limit to the upper weight of a cue but no limit to the lower weight of a cue. Does that indicate anything?
