The Great Southern 8-ball Tour-updates

We do have a laptop- sorry you didn't get the results last time. You will get them as long as I don't get too busy running the tourney.

The final 16:
Matches resume tomorrow at 3pm.
Winners side: Tony Watson vs. Shannon Daulton
Helena Thornfeldt vs. Gabe Owen
Danny Turner vs. Bryan Davis
Stevie Moore vs. Bill Bailey

One loss side: Doug Young vs. Barry Boney
TF Whittington vs. Monica Webb
Paul Song vs. Mike Janis
Chris Zayas vs. Morris Wood or Tim Luoma (still playing)

This is a good tourney- people are huddling up around the tables....conversing...... that spells ACTION!!! I'm sure there will be some later on. Will post more later on.

*** Note: Mike Janis has turned from TD to pool player!!! He has played pretty sporty pool- drew Helena Thornfeldt his first match- unfortunately he lost. But battled and has played really good. He's got to contend w/ Paul tomorrow so we'll see.:D

Watson vs. Daulton, what a match-up! :)

I'd have to give the edge to Shannon on this one. Seeing his tournament demeanor on numerous occasions, I'm thinking Shannon did get himself to bed early, preparing for today's afternoon matinee with Tony.

Tony, on the other hand, may be a formidable opponent in any venue he steps foot in, but it all depends on if he got an appointment last night for action. That's where Tony Watson shines best.

This isn't a gimme round for Shannon, though. He's going to have to play his best to beat the North Carolinian. Both players have powerful breaks.

Looking forward to the updates, and I'm staying tuned! :p

Here's a great picture of the Tony Watson from North Carolina taken last year at the U.S. Open!

That's a tough field down there in Greenville!

Has anybody seen Jerry Bento? He's been a little MIA in recent times, but last I heard, he was living in Greenville area.

Winners side: Tony Watson vs. either Gabe or Helena
Danny Turner vs. Stevie Moore

One loss side: Doug Young vs. Bryan Davis
Monica Webb vs. Bill Bailey
SD vs. Paul Song
Tim Luoma vs. loser of Gabe & Helena
The score is 5-4 in Gabe & Helena's match. Gabe is ahead.

JAM, I think Jerry is in ATL now. Saw him not long ago and I think that's what he said.

More updates later.:)

Gabe ended up beating Helena hill-hill. Gabe will play Tony Watson on the A side, and Helena will play Tim Luoma on the B side. Sunday second round matches are about to begin.

The final 6 are:

Stevie and Tony on the winners side.

Bill Bailey vs. Gabe Owen score is 3-0 Gabe.

Paul Song vs. local player Danny Turner. Match just started.

Tony Watson beat Gabe 6-1. The kid is shootin in!!!:)

Updates...................

Stevie beats Tony. They were neck and neck the whole match.

Tony and Gabe are now playing.

We shall have a winner here shortly. We have had a great tourney this weekend here at Sporty's. It was a tough little field even though we only had 34 players.

Props to Paul Song for a fourth place finish considering he lost his first match. :)

Later.

Stevie & Tony in the finals!!!:D It should be a great set. These guys have been doing battle for years. The look of determination on their faces is truly intense. Every shot that is taken is like it is their last. The crowd is gathered watching every shot with anticipation. It won't be long...and we will have a winner here.

The great Southern 8-Ball Tour. The best in the south!!

Tony wins the first set. Score 6-0 Stevie shot once and didn't have a shot then. The second set just started. It won't be long- the first one took about 15 minutes. He's shootin lights out. Fast as he can.

Stevie Moore wins The Great Southern 8-Ball stop in Greenville, SC.

Final Results:

1st Stevie Moore

2nd Tony Watson

3rd Gabe Owen

4th Paul Song

5th /6th DannyTurner, Bill Bailey

7th/8th Helena Thornfeldt, Doug Young

It was a great tourney. We had a grest time - Sporty's is a world class pool room. Jimmy Hodges has IMO the nicest pool room in the south. Well, our next stop is Reno, NV for an IPT event. We are only having 1 more tourney - maybe two and a finale down in Mobile, AL. Check the tournament calendar on Az for the dates.:)

No he didn't play anyone. But there was some conversing about T and Stevie playing again. Would love to see that take off.

i guess the az poster that wanted to bet on gabe didnt want to to bad or he would have been there this weekend.

:D

Hey Jam,

Tony was wearing the same shirt yesterday. It must be his "lucky attire" that he wears on Sunday like Tiger Woods wears red.

Tony told me that he might match up with Billy Bailey giving Billy the 7 ball, but nothing ever materialized. He also said that he was in negotiations to match up with Stevie even, but nothing came of that either. When I left the pool room yesterday afternoon, there were a few action guys on the scene, so I don't know if anyting happened last night or not.

I allso would like to give kudos to Danny Turner, a local guy who played well this weekend.

Shannon runs a great event, and Sporty's is a top notch pool room. I'm sure that with the success of the tournaments at the Palace and Sporty's, there will be at least 2 tournaments in Greenville worth attending each year.

In fact, we are lucky in Greenville to have the pool talent to watch and learn from. I don't think that there is a more concentrated area where the IPT is represented as well as it is around the upstate area. Stevie recently moved to Atlanta, but was born and raised around the Greenville area. Shannon Daulton is living here now. So are Sammy and Loree Jon Jones. We also have Mike Gulyassy who is a great player and cue maker who lives in Greenville. Larry Nevel lived in Greenville until a couple of months ago. Earl lives about 50 miles north of town and Grady Mathews lives in Columbia, SC less than 100 miles south of Greenville. We see both of them at alot of the local tournaments. Of course Tony Watson adds to the "action" side of things around.

It was great to have Monica and Helena around for the 2 events in Greenville. They are both class acts, and world class players. There are many excellent female players in the area, and they get a treat seeing in person how well Monica and Helena actually play.

Alice Rim also showed up as a railbird this weekend. I am more impressed with Alice, and her game each time that I am able to speak with her.

One other note of interest....I talked some to Mike Janis at the tournament and he told me that he has several tournaments planned in the Southeast between now and the $25,000 added Viking National Championships in November. So if anyone wants to play to get the free entry into the National Championships, they will get the opportunity over the next 6 weeks or so. We all miss Mike's tournaments (he hasn't had one in a few months), and look forward to the Viking events coming up in the area.

Mike

Thanks for the kind words Mike. I enjoyed seeing you again too!

The tournament was a blast for me, in spite of not being able to make it there early enough on Saturday to play. There certainly was a lot of talent there, as well as some great matches. As always, Shannon and Marge do a great job of running them.
