The Greatest Male Player Today

Efren and Earl have a deep respect for each other. Efren I think is the best all around player these days. I think Earl is the best 9 baller. Mike Sigel I think was the best all around player in his prime. I can't leave Nick Varner out either. The Kentucky Colonel was even money to win anything in his prime!

Steve Mizerak was one of the best straight pool players ever, won more than his fair share of 9-ball tournaments, and did very well in several of Grady's one pocket tournaments in the '90s (well after his prime) including a second to 19-year-old Shannon Daulton at the 1992 Legends of One Pocket tournament and a third to Parica and Grady at the 1995 Roanoke One Pocket Championship.

He has to be considered one of the best all-around players.

One more thing tournament play is much different than gambling, just because a guy may beat someone in a short set doesn't mean he is as good as the other player. The proof is when the guys are gambling and they play all night long, the better player wins 90% of the time.

Some of the top 10 players will not even think about gambling with Efen. At least not without a spot.

Parica will take on anyone when it comes to gambling.
Yes......including Efren

Corey Deuel will gamble even 9-ball with Efren, and I believe he has beaten him as much as he has lost to him.
Doubt it.
Efren's backer will take it as long as they don't use that Sour Dough Rack.
Archer would play him too w/out the Sour Dough rack imo.
So would Busta.

Best player?

I have a hard time tossing Ralf and Mika in the "Greatest" catagory. I cant beat them so dont get me wrong but after being around the game for 25+ years I seen the greatest players of the era. A short list would include Nick Varner, Miz, Sigel, Hopkins, Efren, Grady and Danny Diliberto...they have won titles in all principals of the game. NEVER forget BUDDY <not known for his 14.1 but I'm sure he can run a "C" note>...just another opinion!!

Best Player

Here is my two cents,

Number One current player EFREN. He can win at anything, anytime, against anyone. His poor showing in 9 Ball Banks was a question of not playing enough two way shots. He was out of his league in this regionally dominated event. I wish he would practice that game before the DCC.

Number Two RALF. He wins everywhere against all comers. For those with short memories, Ralf is still the current World 14.1 Champion. He won the BCA invitational last year and the DCC 9 Ball this year amongst his other wins. Very even tempered. Very focused. Primarily plays where one pocket is not most important.

You choose number three up. There are ten or more players in contention for that spot. If Alex would just get focused, he could be number one! He is still having too much fun to care.

Efern's Best game is Balkline he has stated that and I knew the guy that helped him with his game before he passed to the great billiard room in the sky. My question is why dont he challenge someone for a game or a exhibition???

What about the champions of the past like Ralph Greenleaf and Willie Mosconi? We should always take into consideration that they played on 5X10's with tighter pockets and with balls that weren't perfectly round.

If everyone goes back and look at the top men's player's list, Efren is number one alot for ever year since 2000 and if not, is in the top 3. The numbers show hands down, Efren is the best so far in this decade/millennium.

Bringing the old thread back to life eh mate.

I agree with u,Efren is a nice guy, funny, and at the same time very good at his game.He take things calmly, and i love his good attitude

Keep up the good work Efren,me supporting u all the way!

2 schools of thought ...

have always existed about who the best player is at
any one given time:

1) Who wins the most money?
2) Who does the best overall in major tournaments?

or it can be a combination of both, but hardly ever will one
player be #1 in both categories. They are 2 different arenas,
and players that excel at one, do not always excel the same
way in the other. There can be many reasons for that, for
example, if a player is known for being a very slow player,
many other money players might turn down a match up with
him, so he will not end up winning the most money. Doesn't
mean that he isn't the best player, simply that because he
is slow, he has less opportunities to win money. That could
hold true for a player that is known to try to shark his opponents
all the time, he would have less opportunity to make money.
The ones you really have to worry about, are the ones when
you get done you say, "You know, he was really a nice guy,
and I didn't mind dropping 50 grand to him. I'll get it back
later"..... now, you need to worry, because he has added you
to his 'play monthly' list.

At present, I think the top four are:

Pagulayan
Hohmann
Hohmann
Pagulayan

Yeah, it really is that close.

Cliff has to be mentioned, though. He may or may not be the best one pocket player alive. From what I've read in this thread, most people say Efren. From a consistency standpoint that may be the case, but I've seen both of them play, and I don't think anyone can beat Cliff in one hole when he's at his best.

I heard a story from a guy who used to run w/ Cliff. He said that the reason he plays so much one hole and does not play in most nine ball tournaments is b/c Johnny Archer gave Cliff the 7 ball once and tortured him with it.

Cliff will match up one hole 90% of the time, but that does not mean he's not capable of winning any 9 ball tournaments. He just chooses not to enter them.
Last year at the DCC Efren gave Cliff 8-7 and beat him 11 to 5 and the year before did the same thing. I heard Cliff say his giving up on Efren.

Cuetechustla, is this Billy Jay Trotter?. :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

If you replaced Efren's name with Earl and took out all punctuation then maybe...lol. There would be 2 or 3 or 4 references to cuetec cues in there as well!
