the hard truth (quit gambling)

Just re-assess your game and get the spot you need. Gambling is more honesty with yourself than playing skill. Have you ever given away the game and lost? Now it's time to simply get a better spot. If I read this properly you were a good or maybe great player. Time takes it's toll. If you like to gampble be honest with yourself and simply get the spot needed even though it wasn't required a year or so ago. Throw out the pride and start gambling. It's not gambling when someone has a lock.

Thread made me think of this...

From the 1998 movie "Croupier"

"Gambling's not about money... Gambling's about not facing reality, ignoring the odds. "

Thought it was a good quote...keep posting guys..and gals.

playing for fun?

anyone else notice when they play for nothing how bad they play? for the last week-week 1/2 I've tried to "play for fun" and you only get to play weaker players. good players don't want to play for nothing. I find myself letting off of my game, joking around, and down-right playing foolishly when there is nothing to play for. not to mention...even the "weak" players beat me when I do this:mad: what a waste of time!! I'm just going to have to bear down and "make" myself win games after this horrible week or so of not playing for anything. I've never played so bad in my life. I'm going to start tonight. I now have motivation to play for something-except to win! playing for "fun" just isn't fun at all. maybe playing $1 a game or something small, but nothing is NO fun. it didn't take me long to realize this fact. I am really learning to like my other shafts on my DZ cue though. (i have 4!! 3 DZ shafts, 1 predator) something good came out of this torture.

I have always been one to incite a little controversy or going against the grain so I will say it. I was a fan of Pool Hall Junkies, and thought it a great flick. So here is a quote from it.

"There comes a point in a man's life, when you need to step up, step out, and see what the f*ck you got."

I like that quote. Quitting Gambling is fine. I don't gamble, and when I do it is a dollar a set. Don't quit the game. Every boxer has to train before the money fight. If you want to get back in it. Take 6 months out, train yourself, get your game back (eye of the tiger anyone?) and then IF the time and need ever comes. Don't lose.

Quite the contrary, I've noticed how bad I play when I play for money. I stop enjoying the game, and can't concentrate because I'm thinking about money and not about pool. It ruins the game for me.

My take

I am a working man - tax accountant for a big 4 firm. I make good money and have a little to gamble with. My take is you have to play for SOMETHING to keep from just banging balls around. You have to have that little bit of pressure - even if its small to "season" yourself. Playing in the absense of stakes to me is a sure fire way of bringing your game down a notch. Find an amount your comfortable playing with and play for that. Just dont play for money you cant affort to lose.

I disagree completely.

I play because I love the game, not to win a few bucks here and there.

Hey Duke

How about I tell you I will beat you all day long for nothing? I am not a big gambler, quite the contrary. I read a recent post where a guy said he enjoyed busting people, made him smile as a matter of fact. You know what Duke, I wish I didn't know people like that. I smile all day everyday and spend my money taking care of my family and helping out a few folks in need now and then. I have played with Andrew Manning a few times and enjoyed it. I usually keep people laughing most of the time. I will tell you something else too. I was a BCA Certified Instructor for 4 years and do know a little about the game. Certified by our own RandyG here on AZ. I have had my wrist restructured and have had to develope a new stroke because it don't work like most wrist anymore. So, go ahead and gamble what ya can and enjoy. Just remember there are some games out here that will challange you. I just don't covet your cash.
Good Luck, Purdman:D

you probably would Purdman.

Do what you like

This reminds me of one of my favorite little things I've read on here. It was about a guy called something like "25-cent Johnny from Long Beach, CA" - he could play like a pro for 25c, anything more and he'd crumble. Could be you're just unlucky in gambling, were off those nights or you just ended up running into the wrong people to play then.

I do agree with what was said about the common hustler. Their lives aren't that great (I'd at least have a job for health insurance, etc, that stuff is expensive) and they spend an incredible amount of time working for what they end up making. They think they make a lot in a night, but you've got to take into account the money and time spent getting to those places - it is more of a lifestyle than a job. Unless you feel that you can take pretty much anybody on a given night, you will end up losing when playing people you don't know well enough. Some people that lose a lot just have a gambling problem.

But, whatever you do, remember to enjoy the game first and foremost. If you know you can make a profit, that's fine, just remember if you gamble to keep it within the limits of "entertainment" costs.

Gambling

When people invest in something, they expect to get something back in return. They expect a payback(s) of some kind.

When you invest in an education, you expect to make better money than you would have.

When you buy a new car, you expect good performance, looks, etc.. from that car for ? number of years.

When you get married, you expect certain things out of the marriage.

You bet on yourself everyday of your life, why should Pool be any different?
Just be smart about it.

I love to play just to play. I will bang balls around for hours at a time. In league, I always try to do the impossible stroke shots, with 14 feet of draw to get shape when a 3 inch stun shot and a different pocket would have worked just fine. I win about 50% of my league matches. When I play for fun with someone it gets worse, I really like to let 'whitey' go. But when I have to gamble you wouldn't even be able to tell it was the same person playing. I get a bigger kick out of 3 fouling someone than I do running out on them. But I am usually broke and rarely get to play with the $$ like I used to before I had a family.

Duke, You can come out and play with me for a buck a rack anytime or just for the fun of watching balls go in the holes. Either way .
