The Hustler is on PRIME

It took me a few viewings to really get what a dark/bleak tale underlies all the cool pool. It is one depressing story when you cut to the chase. I watched it about three mo's ago and i'm good for the time being. Classic flic but man its heavy.
 
It’s too bad the 3-cusion scenes weren’t more extensive. Interplay between a wealthy amateur (on his own equipment), and a determined ‘killer instinct’ scuffler with limited carom experience (larger balls, likely ivory) makes for a very interesting interplay (though mostly to enthusiasts).

The movie wasn't about the game. The game was just the vehicle for the brutal backstory. Showing more of the 3c wouldn't have moved the storyline. IMO this part of the movie WAS pretty vivid in its rich-guy vs. scuffler dynamics.

Have you seen Hud? It's another Newman movie a few years before the Hustler. Even darker, imo.

Its based on a McMurtry book, Hud is a total pos. Newman lived out there in the Panhandle to get a feel for the place. Fast Eddie's a prince compared to Hud.
 
I can't stand Brandon deWilde in anything, especially "Shane", although he actually acted fairly well in "In Harm's Way", for him. First time I saw "Hud" he just got in the way for me, lol. It's a tough, dreary, depressing, bleak and well made film. "The Hustler" is dark and noir-ish but at least some sort of redemption for Newman's character, or at least acknowledgment of his failings and Gleason is a blast. George C. Scott was great and pure evil and in a different way a terrific foil for James Stewart in "Anatomy Of A Murder" - he killed that role as the prosecutor.

This is the real story...The Hustler is a take off on this film😂

Though initially intended to appeal to a ‘drama’ audience, I’ll bet a viewer poll today would prove that over the years, the majority were pool enthusiasts.
 
I went on Prime last night but No Country for Old Men popped up first in the selections.
So I rewatched that. I have the Hustler on DVD somewhere, probably sitting in the DVD player that now never gets used.
I'll watch it tonight, one way or the other. Kind of cold out there, good movie night.
