"The Monk" Performance Pool Tour

At the Billiard Den last night a fellow walked in with some information about the Performance Pool Tour he is trying to upstart in Texas that was developed by Tim Miller aka "The Monk".

The basic concept is that you compete against a single player each week, competing for points. Each player that registers is previously given a deck of cards that all have printed shots on each card. Each card is worth a certain amount of points according to the difficulty of the shot. Before the match begins the players pick 5 cards randomly from their deck and they exchange two cards. The scoring is based on your number of attempts, etc. You can qualify for a regional and national tournaments, and theoretically there should be a lot of money involved by the end of it.

I was curious to see if any of you have participated or heard about this concept. I have signed up and am looking forward to it, I think it's really a smart smart concept as it is competitive practice. The Monk developed these shots over a 2 year period with the idea of practice and improvement as the basis for the shot selections. You are really competing against yourself and aren't wasting your time when you compete against a significantly lower level player than yourself.

We have set this up to make our own segment or division at the Billiard Den on Friday nights which makes it convenient for everyone.

Thoughts?

I am doubtful that this Performance Pool Tour will be successful.
It says amateur level, but for a projected $11k....you will undoubtedly have pro level players sneaking in on that kind of money.

Don't know too much about this character the Monk - I e-mailed him a question and all I get is a new $$$ prop in the E-mail - He is now promoting Rachel Abbink on a video - he uses the name the Monk but yrs ago there was a good road player called the Monk but it ain't him so I think he is another promoter with a new prop every few months - good luck
if you go with any of his promotions.

The Monk your talking about is from Philly, then moved to LV....He came into Philly when i was living there back in the 90`s... He played Jimmy Fusco One pocket for 200 a game and lost 38 games in a 2 day session...

no offense, but what a joke......go market to a lord of the rings forum or something, but not here..

buddy, no offense... but you have no idea what the hell you are talking about. I'm not affiliated in ANY WAY with this league. This is no different than someone posting about a players in TAP or APA or BCA... it's a new concept and was wondering what general consensus is on the league.

let me state this again, i have no affiliation whatsoever with this further than i just signed up to participate in it.

from what i can tell, playing ability does not necessarily affect your ability to teach the game. Like I said, I don't know anything about this dude, but no one has said anything good yet, so I'm not optimistic. I still think the concept is really good, I'll keep a log of the experience and let you guys know how it goes as it seems no one has participated yet.

I have read "The Lesson" book from The Monk and I think is pretty good,I learned new things and it has some interesting drills. I don't know about this new league but I believe that is something of personal preferences, either you liked or not.
You can be a good teacher without being the best player in the world.

I bought the Monk's videos off this site a year ago. They were absolutely worthless IMO; the worst investment I have ever made (and I've made some lu-lu's). I can't imagine anything useful coming from this phoney ninja, as he seems to perceive himself. Just my humble opinion.
