The most important contribution to pool in 10 years.

"AZ Billiards!!! Where would we all be without the 'net'? "

Probably out playing pool!!!

I can't believe how much time is wasted daily by members who would rather sit around trying to think of some silly question to get their name in print instead of actually getting out and accomplishing something. Pool has less and less players each year as the young are not being introduced to the sport. Between playing on the Net and playing Video Games they never have time to seek other, varied, forms of recreation. 10 years ago there were approximately 22 Pool rooms in Cincinnati. Three years ago there were 16. Today there are 4 and one of them will close in a couple of months. Nobody is supporting this industry what-so-ever. Everyone is saying how they love this sport but they are not helping it by sitting around just talking about it.

Some of those members that you are referring to have all accomplished quite a bit in the pool world. Perhaps more than you can even imagine. That is what qualifies them to write about such diverse topics on here and promote the game that you make a living from. If you think it is the fault of the AZ Forums that pool rooms are closing, then I would suggest you've been inhaling too much wood dust.

I have been closely involved in the billiard industry for over forty years and have seen several up and down cycles. What's happening now is more a reflection of our over all economy then anything else. Take a look around. All kinds of businesses are closing, not just pool rooms. The way each of us can support the game that we love is to do something on an individual basis. I went to the local boys club last week to set up Saturday morning pool clinics for the kids, no charge! What have you done lately to promote pool in your area? Or have you been just wasting all your time making cues? :shakehead:

I hope you are talking about Jay Helfert or someone else and not me. I probably put in more time on the table than any other AZBer. I teach pool, gamble, play in tournaments, practice, travel to play in tournaments, do pool commentary, take pool lessons, do marketing for pool rooms and even design and print tournament charts. :shocked2:

Thanks for the vote of confidence. ;)
I'll try to get off my lazy ass and do something constructive. Maybe I could even try to get you a job doing commentary. Oops, too late. Did that already.:)

Hey, I thought Joey did a great job as a commentator...he asked Thoreston some very good questions. This beginner learned quite a bit from Joey's questioning of a top player. So...maybe not the greatest contribution, but a very fine one it was!

I don't understand why people feel obligated to be the negative voice! I understand if you don't care for the thread or the topic of the thread, and if that's the case then simply ignore it!! You really don't have to make any comment. Just leave and go to a thread that you might enjoy or learn from.

Maybe someone posted this and got a chance to learn about a product that they didn't know about existed. Seriously it seems like there's always a couple of people out there that look for friendly threads and try to turn it into a battle royale!!

If you would just leave people be, maybe you wouldn't come off as being a Dick. Get it? I couldn't help myself sorry. With that being said, there's plenty of threads on AZ, maybe you can find one that's for you and leave the one's you don't like alone. Nobody needs to hear the negativity, and certainly don't need the keyboard tough guys to type their threats!!

Oh, and just to let you know. I live in Virginia and all those pool rooms that closed in Ohio, all closed because I didn't make it there. Because only I affect the economy!!

I'm sure you're a great cue maker, and I'm sure if I ever want one of your cues, my chances for a discount have surely flown out the window!! Maybe you were just having a bad day and let the worse get a hold of you, but when you start negativity on a thread, it spreads like wildfire, and then you have people that feel they have to defend themselves.

Just live and let live!!

As always Joey, great post. Aside from the afforementioned Wei Cuetable, I would have to say live streaming. How cool is it that you can now watch anything from a local bar tournament to the U.S. Open or world championships?

Dags, I wanted everyone to put in their thoughts so I didn't list all of the things that come to mind. Your suggestion about Live-Streaming is on the money. While I am just beginning to get involved with it, Live-Streaming could become a serious industry before too long.

Live-Streaming is in its infancy and it can be done on a nickel or a dollar depending upon what you are trying to accomplish or what your budget is limited to. It's great to be a part of it and I expect Live-streaming will become mainstream before too long.

Thanks everyone :)

Wow, thank you guys for the kind words. I want to mention that CueTable is really a group effort by many people. (click to check out our thank list )

To help the sport, not only we need better communication between players, but also we need better presentation to invite people to join. I hope to continue being a part of this positive energy with everyone in making pool a truly enjoyable activity. :)

IMHO, the followings are some significant events/movements from the past 10 years:

Billiard Education Foundation
BCA Instructor Programs
International Pool Tour Website
The Accu-Stats Player Scoring System
World Straight Pool Championships
The Development of Many Personal Pool Blogs (including Samm, Mika, Thorsten, Sarah, Caroline, Gail, NYCGrind, Tim, Stacy, plus more)
New Video Technology Used In Teaching Pool

As we can all see, pool is really getting better. Our challenge lying ahead now is to showcase it to a broader audience.
