what are your opinions on the new rack and where they are going to rack the balls?i think that and breaking from anywhere is going to turn it into a brak contest and some upsets and surprises may lurk.what do ya think?

Can you tell us unfortunate people (that don't live anywhere near a pro pool event) what you are talking about?

rack

they are not using the sardo rack.they are racking the 1 ball on the spot,as opposed to before ,when they put the 9 on the spot, and you can break anywhere behing the head string,no break box.thats what i was told.

Buck - What you are calling new is the real system. Out of 29 yrs of playing tournaments accross the country I have only seen a break box a couple times, and only seen one disfunctional place wanted the 9 on the spot. The Sardo rack is no better than hand racking, if the balls are going to roll off after racking the rack makes no difference because it's the spot or cloth.

You always have the option if someone else racks to make them keep racking until you are happy with it. If you rack your own then the other player can make you re-rack until he's happy they are tight.
Breaking is a skill that every highend player practices about as much as making balls.

I wish you well and may they all roll straight :)

rack

before this year, the nine ball was racked on the spot.that will not be the case this year, never mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no surprises

There won't be any surprises. They are going back to the standard rack and break that was outlawed because too many people had it wired. The only surprise would be if break and run outs aren't at least as common as they are now. With all the attention focused on the break now someone usually figures out any rack position and it is only a short time until others follow regardless though.

Maybe my bar table practice break that I was using a day or two ago is the solution. Being too lazy to walk to the other end of the table after racking I just banked off of the head rail into the one ball. That would be a bit tough to deal with if someone specified only the head rail could be hit on a nine foot table. Of course it would be mighty silly looking and the game would be to try to pass breaks to the other player.

It was also mentioned

that it is 'Rack your own' this year, which made Corey Deuel unhappy.

My opinion it isn't going to a "new rack", it is returning to the old rack and the old spot. If you're young enough I suppose you might think the Sardo and racking the 9 on the footspot was always used, but that's really young. The only reason that the 9 was put on the spot and the break box imposed was because the Sardo made it so easy for the pros to pocket balls with the standard spot of the 1 on the footspot.
I'm glad they aren't using the Sardo anymore, but I do like the idea of the break box to cut down on break and runs and I wish that was kept. As some other poster said they're pros they'll figure out how to defeat any rack/break position configurations.
I do think the rack your own that snapshot mentioned is a mistake. I've always thought an event of that level should have a neutral referee racking them, neither player should.
