Just because you bolt the rails on the slate, that don't mean your rails are going to line up straight, especially in the side pockets, if you CAN'T adjust the rails left and right to center the side pockets of the rails with the side pocket slate shelf. And guess what, it don't even matter if you bought rebuilt rails from Mark Gregory, this also includes the Anniversaries and Centennial's too. If when you have the slate stripped down, you don't correct the rail bolt alignment with the rails, you're never going to be able to adjust them to fit. I marked out the centerline of all 18 rail bolt holes on this GC1 slate, keep in mind, it only takes 1 rail bolt hole not drilled center to throw the whole rails out of alignment. Look at the alignment marks in relation to the bolt holes which are only 5/8" yet the rail bolt is 3/8" passing through to the bolt hole into the bottom of the rails. These are just a few to show you what I mean.

Ok, I'll help you out then. Go back and look at the very first 2 pictures. See that line scribed on the surface of the slate passing through to bolt hole? That line is suppose to go through the center of the bolt hole, because that line represents the center of the 3/8" rail bolt thickness. Now if you look closely, you'll see that line is very close to the outside edge of the hole, which means you can't center the rails in that direction even if you wanted to, because there's no room in that hole for adjustment, there's plenty of room in the other direction, which just means you can't center the side pockets on the side pocket shelf is all.
 
Thanks, I see it now. So, he old measure twice cut (or drill) once? The fix?
 
Easy to see that the line doesn’t go through the center of that hole. but to anyone who isn’t a table mechanic or at least messes with table often, it’s hard to tell what’s up out of context

Yes, but the most off set is in the side rails, you can't line the side pocket up with the pocket shelf, and its been that way for about 60 years, no one has done anything to correct it so the rails can be lined up correctly. The funny thing is, both sides are opposite of each other, so the rails can't be squared up before they're bolted down.

Well, hopefully anyone here that owns a GC would want that checked and fixed if this is the case. And like I already mentioned, Anniversaries and Centennial's have the same issue.
 
So, the fix? Glue a dowel piece into the improperly drilled hole & then drill properly? For stripped out wood screws I've done the crude trick of pounding a glued golf tee into the hole, cut it flush, then redrill & replace the screw.
