The missing pool movie, The Player, is found. This is a poster of the Minnesota Fats movie shot in Baton Rouge, LA and released in 1971. It was BAD.

Hey Hemi,

You won't believe this but I remember when they were making that. I was 10yrs. old:D . Reason I remember is they had radio adds on promoting Fats coming to one of the local joints to sign autographs and do a demonstration ,etc. I thought it was cool and wanted to see him but my dad said they didn't let kids in places like that:( .

The movie premiered in Jackson, MS shortly after it did in Baton Rouge in a large theatre. I was there as was Fatty. He did a banks demonstration, his long suite, that was impressive. The man did bank well.

Player Pics

Here is some of what I have The Player. A pressbook, and some lobby cards. Sure would like to see the movie someday.

LOL,I'm not so sure you want to do that. The movie doesn't show up on imdb, not under title or under Fats credits. I think I found one actor from the film listed. It musta really, really been BAD!!!

Hey Hemi,
Do you know of anywhere I could get a copy of the tape or disc?

I am sure I have seen worse pool movies than The Player could be!!! I would enjoy seeing Fats in it, though.

I don't believe the movie is on DVD or even tape, Railbird. I have a DVD of the trailer for the movie but problem is it was converted to some form that is unrecognizable by any Windows software I have. So I can't make a copy or even save it to my computer. The trailer was from a film, shot to video and converted to DVD. I was going to post it on line but haven't been able to as yet.

Hemi,

Do you have a file extension or anything? I might be able to track down the format for you.

I think HyperCam will do the trick. I use HyperSnap all the time. You can download and get a free trial. at

It says it's a VOB file and the extension is, VTS_01_1. It is just a 78KB file. About 1min.10sec. Also, it wont let me send it in an email. It just freezes.

Hemi something like mediaplayer or realplayer should open it. The VTS stands for the video tracks on the disc (Video Tracks Set), 01_1 would be set 1 track 1. That's the DVD recording softwares (Roxio,Nero, etc) thingy. The video should be mpeg(?),AVI most likely mpeg2 and should open with one of the regular players. It could be something else though that Real and Microsoft don't cover though....maybe something Apple.

Never heard of it but would love to see it,how do movies just disappear?

There was an article in Pool & Billiard within the last year about The Player. There is a guy that has some copies of the movie on film, I think he owned the theaters it played at, or something. He was called and asked if he would be willing to sell one of the films, I guess he said he wanted several thousand dollars. It would still have to be converted to video, or dvd.
