The pool scene in Adelaide

Well I am in Adelaide Australia now. The pool scene here sucks..... actually it is even worse there is no pool scene to speak of! I found some pool halls and while they are alright places (ignoring the fact they have 3 1/2 X 7 tables with snooker cut pockets and balls the size of marbles and the cueball is actually smaller then the object balls!). The pool halls are frickin empty. I went into Chalkers on Jetty Road which is very close to where I live and the guy working there tells me that there is no league in the city at all and there might be one player in the city who would be interested in some action, and he is some snooker pro and would more then likely want to play on the marble tables knowing my luck.

This really sucks, I had thought the scene would be alot better then this. I came from Calgary and I had no dreams of a scene as good as Calgary, but at least some sort of pool scene with a weekly tourney here and there once in a while would have been nice.

Perfect!!!

Sounds like a perfect business opportunity to me!!! All you need is the capital. Sorry I can't help.

Otherwise, get used to the local game, snooker w/ marbles.

Adelaide is a hot spot of pool action. Usually the English version but some good 9-ball action.

You must be at a bad room. Look around a bit more, there are better pool halls but I don't know the names or locations sorry.

Some of the best 9-ball players in Australia are in Adelaide. Ask around for Phil Rielly, Emile Rierra, Alex Everenaidis and James Dalahunty. Them and plenty of other of great players should be willing to take your $$:-)

Hey Celtic..
You stayin in Adelaide or you moving around a bit..
I too am surprised your not finding any action. Don't give up, you're probably in the worst room.

I think I heard about this James guy. I was back in Chalkers messing around on the snooker table when a couple guys came in and started playing 9-ball. Well I kept my eye on them and watched their speed and then went up and chatted with them asking about tournies around town and leagues and such and these guys knew alot more about the pool scene then the pylon I was talking to that worked the counter at the pool hall.

Turned out that one of the guys that came in to shoot 9-ball was actually this James guy's dad and he said that his son played about as strong as anyone in Adelaide. I will have to check out the hall a little more and hope to run into afew of the players. Thanks for those other names to watch for, I will keep them in mind when I am checking things out or setting up something.

With a little more searching and such I still have hopes for this city. I need a car now....

So you ran into Jame's dad Mick Delahunty. He is a great bloke and legend of the 8-ball game. Ex-Australian captain. Won a lot of big tourneys. Doesn't look like a gun player, but keeps on winning.

Send him my regards if you see him again:-)

Also, keep your eye out for Phil Jones, Phil Hulley, Mark Warry, John Barton, Colin Laotaris, Chris Lilly and Shannon Purcell. All tough players and good shooters who will probably be game for a 9-ball challenge! If you beat any of them I'll be impressed!

Celtic, pretty tough to beat the pool scene in Calgary! By the sounds of it you can at least find a little action around Adelaide. Do you live in Adelaide now or are you just visiting?

I live here now. I played James today a couple cheap sets. He shoots real strong, probably a little better then me due to potting ability. He was working the counter while playing so I don't think he ever got to his top speed due to interuptions. He got me the first set 7-6 and in the second set I was up 4-1 and he had to quit as the pool hall was getting too busy. Very nice guy as is his dad. I don't know how good the guys top speed is due to us not playing alot and me not seeing him zoned in but I don't think he is a Edwin Montal level player, I think I would take Dave Martin, Nick Kruger, or Tyler Edey against him as well for that matter. The guy is definately a snooker player who shoots strong 9-ball, he just has not had the 9-ball scene that is needed to hone that game.

At least there is a pool scene here, I am looking forward to matching up against all the top players here and seeing how I will fit in on the 9-foots.

Celtic, well you must be a good shooter to play on or around par with James. Most these guys are great potters with snooker and 8-ball backgrounds. 8-ball on the english tables has small rounded pockets so accurate potting is crucial for top level play.

James etc have limited 9-ball experience as you seem to have realized, but they will provide a very tough match. Enjoy :D

Yeah he shoots strong, just does not move the ball around like most 9-ball players do. The table we were playing on is blisteringly fast though so that makes moving around the table alot more difficult. I am quite happy with the scene compared to the initial stuff I was told.

I played around on one of your 8-ball tables, they have the snooker cut pockets and are 3 1/2 X 7 but that is not the problem. The cueball is smaller then the object balls and that screws up all the aiming, you actually have to aim to undercut the object ball from normal in order to make the pot since the edge of the cueball will actually go under the object ball and travel a touch farther before contact. Very tricky, and quite lame. I did not like oversized cueballs in Canada and I don't like these smaller cueballs in Australia.

Yes, aiming is quite different with the small 1 7/8" cue ball, especially on angle shots. Will take a while to adapt to, and cause some problems when going back to the Amercian pool balls.

The small ball is suited to stunning back for position, deep draws and follow shots are pretty hard to control. If you get a kick on a follow shot, the cue ball will nearly stop. Crazy game, but that's where most the betting takes place down under.

btw. Quite a few of the guys will be preparing to head to the Geelong Open March 27 (I think) I may even fly back myself to attend.

If you get the chance, I recommend it as a great weekend at chance to mix with Aussie's most determined pool folk. There is usually a couple of car loads of Adelaide boys who make the trip.

Glad to see you finally arrived and hooked up with the "pool" in Adelaide..
I played with James dad at the first Annual 9 ball Australian Championships in Sydney back in '92...( I give lessons in Melbourne at Heather Zapppias room each year...mention "Action Jackson" from Perth...friend of Jack Halligan) another OZ player worth knowing about...
previous info about his national 8 ball team experience is quite correct.
"Mike" is a a good guy and good player...
great guy to know because he knows EVERYBODY in Australia...
hope you keep finding more places to play and let me know where to go before my next trip.. maybe in august...

note* they usually have a tourney in Adelaide to qualify for a trip to Vegas in May...
keep in touch.....

I know this to be true for New South Wales..

http://www.pubpool.net

that link gives you the NSW pool league, with the trip to Vegas up for grabs, maybe you can have a look round there for the same deal in Adelaide

I usually use a small 12mm tip when I have to play with their "toy" cue ball..the cue ball is only 1 7/8". object balls are 2"....I joke around with some of the guys down there and call their version of pool "TOY POOL"!!!
