I was watching NBC's Nightly News with Lester Holt yesterday evening. They were doing a story, "Summer Travel Nightmare in Europe". There was a few second interview with a traveler, Jamie O'Grady, regarding baggage issues.

I have no idea what he said as I could not take my eyes off of what was in the background at his place. This was obviously a remote interview in his home, which seemed to be nicely decorated. But the pool table! Black cloth with a single hanging mini pendant light that only covered the center of the table. I have no words.

I'm pretty sure that it just looks like a single bulb because of the angle from which the picture is taken. But, of course, it still sucks big time.

On the travel thing I’ve been to Europe twice in the last 12 weeks and am leaving for a month again next week. Again why I ignore TV myself and many friends have had zero trouble this year. Only one person I know had problems from Prague to Croatia a hour long flight that took 6 or 7 hours.

On the decor tables. I’ve been in the house flip or tear down and build a new one the last couple years. I look at houses from 2-6M which are 3000-7000sqft and most have a box in them, maybe 60% do. A little less on the lower end. Anything over $6M has a box 75%+ of the time. Occasionally I see good balls-80% of the time plastic yellowed Chinese garbage. Always junk cues-99% of the time and 100% yes 100%

I’ve never seen lighting every properly done on a home table-I’ve seen about 150-200 tables in the last couple years. 20% show moderate wear. Less than 10% show lots of wear-but typically you can see then have been there 20+ years.

It’s shameful the shit the home billiard shops install in uneducated peoples homes. My biz partner has bought 2 Bwick home 9’ garbage tables I’ve the past 20 years in Vegas. Last one came with a $40 set of the plastic balls that get collision marks they are so soft/ I couldn’t stand it-I called the joint in riverside ca he bought it from-he’s in Vegas and got him a set of centennial balls(I explained a few things to him-cheap bastard robs him for $10k on a table that’s worth $1500 on Craigslist and ships $40 balls with it) I asked if that was his standard thing. The cues were trash too. I fixed everything.

Point is the home billiard side of our sport is unloading shit onto unsuspecting and uninformed customers. This garbage is finding it’s way into mansions/ and never is the lighting correct.

I get people who don’t play, don’t need a Diamond in their opinion it’s a fat ugly wood table, GC’s look like the 60’s but at least get them balls that won’t dent, and cues that aren’t ramin wood and I didn’t mention the chalk cones and sandy chalk. It’s pure shot going into high end homes. Not trailer parks.

That all I got, man this pisses me off

I spent over 30 years measuring homes for flooring.
Almost every house that had a table it was loaded with laundry or other crap.
Seldom was there a cover on them.
"Pool is fun,lets buy a table"
6 months later
"Pool is boring lets just pile crap on the table"
I've seen the Brunswick starter set and the balls and cues are pretty decent,it's $400 so it should be pretty good.

Most of them bought a table not really knowing if they were interested and then never tried to learn the game or it was bought for the kids who had no one to teach them and quickly lost interest. Of course, there are also classic cars sitting in garages that never quite get rebuilt and tons of hot tubs, swimming pools, outdoor kitchens and treadmills all bought with good intentions and, after a few months, never used. People are people.

I know a guy who is really wealthy.. I'm talking sports team owner level wealthy. Anyway, this guy has a vacation home that costs around $30 million.. and he has a pool table.
But when you see his house you wouldn't believe it.. he has a 7 foot Barbox somewhere in a corner for the kids to play with it.
There's no proper light and the cues are junk.

Most people who don't play pool don't care much about the table.. like you said it's for decoration or the kiddies. Lights, cues, balls and even the table it doesn't matter for them.

I have an older one of those cues that my dad found at a pawn shop for $30 or something. Honestly they are not a bad cue at all. Quality and feel wise, the older ones are similar to a McDermott or Viking. No slouch in that cue. The tip even appears to be a Le Pro.
 
I flew to Europe from Miami a couple of days ago and thankfully no luggage issues. Other than my wife was over weight and I had to pay $100.

But the Euro is worth less than the dollar for the first time in 20 years. Got lucky.

And I bet that guy absolutely loves that table. Good for him.
 
I’ll bet he’s got black lights in the rails with the glow in the dark balls for when the party starts though. That’s what the Europeans I know would do….
