The Pressure Kills Me...

Okay kids its story time...

Last night we had quite the interesting night at my pool league. There aren't a lot of teams and the people who do play have all known each other for years now. So when we walked in and our League Director told me that I was playing the former top team in the house, 3 Amigos I was a little pleased. My very first session with the league was horrible. I was new to the game and just tried to do my best. That sesh the Amigos took it all and then skipped out the next 2 sessions. In the 2 that they didn't play, my team took 1st. So last night, when we finally met after a year of not playing an official game, we were all chomping at the bit to throw down.

So we start shooting and I draw the better player out of their team first. I break and scratch on the break, not good. He picks up the ball and cleans it up. I was a little rattled but still pretty composed. The next match I ended up missing on a tight bank shot that, in hindsight, I shoulda safed. The next guy cleans up. So then I knew, it was gonna be one of those nights. One of those "don't ever miss" nights. The rest of my games were intense to say the least. I refused to go down without a fight and they brought the fight to me. I rode into game 6 without a win but the previous losses were hard fought. By this time I'm so pissed off that I'm chain smoking and my hands are shaking. I want the win more than I want to breathe. The guy I'm playing breaks and I get out of my seat... and then it all clicked. I forgot how to do everything except play pool. Every shot was quick, maybe 6-7 seconds at the most, and solid. I skunked him 10-0 (10 for win, 7 for loss with no balls on table, 0 for no balls dropped). When the 8 dropped my team cheered and I was looking for more balls to drop. Apparently, my win won the match for us.

I find it odd that I lost almost every game, but still my last game mattered. I love the pressure. It was such a rush dropping that 8 after getting whooped on all night.

MORAL: I need to learn how to deal with my losses better, but getting intense helped a little bit.

Aw, the burning itch to win the battle!

Good story.

You play out of the FE on Culebra, don't you?

I heard there are some guys looking for cheap action around there lately. Heard anything about that?

The great players learn to use that intensity or nervousness to their advantage. A really strong player told me once that you should treat every game as if it is double hill. Dont give anything away. If you can master that, you will be a force to be reckoned with.

Actually yeah. There were two guys in there earlier this week when I went in to practice. One of them I'd seen in there before cus he lives close. He's a taller hispanic guy with a goatee, kinda stocky. But he had another friend in there whom I'd never seen before. He was a pretty big guy, muscle wise. Oddly enough he had a Gold's Gym shirt one, as if people had any question as to how he got to be as big as he was. Don't remember names though. I do remember that they were on the table next to me and they watched me walk in and unpack and stuff and the next thing I know one of the waitresses comes over and asks me if I wanted to play for money? and I laughed and was like, "Against you? Nah, I'll play you for free." and she laughed and motioned to the guys behind her and I shook my head and kept practicing. I had some shots I wanted to work on but throughout the night one of them kept asking to play me just for fun but I wasn't in the mood. I think they ended up playing my teammate, Joey though.

Odd that word gets around like that... lol

'Zombiac,
I think you have hit on the real advantage of bar league pool. The team competition aspect CAN be very beneficial for any player's game. There is the opportunity to learn to focus under pressure. There is the opportunity to learn how to deal with a loss with grace and sportsmanship. There is the opportunity to learn how to incorporate strategy into the game all the while trying to find the "zone". And above all, there is the opportunity to learn to give your best effort on EVERY stroke; and accept the consequences.

Pool should NOT be about ego (but it IS, and anyone who says it isn't is just fooling themselves). Embrace the fact; do your best regardless of the situation (rely on your mechanics, with NO thought about the outcome of any game or match); and you will have MANY more successes to enjoy. IT'S A RUSH TO COME THROUGH FOR THE TEAM UNDER PRESSURE (that's why I always want to be playing the last match of the night for the team; the hero or the goat:) ). Those that understand this is just a game; and develop the knack for LOVING victory, but NOT minding defeat, will almost always do better under pressure than those who have not discovered this.
