The problem isn't that non pool players don't know who Efren is

I am thrilled to be with such good company. And you are correct that players like us are not the norm. I live in a remote resort and I am the only one around who truly loves the game and studies it. The bangers that I know think I am Efren;). I travel a fair bit and work hard to get to pool rooms that I have heard of and even let others on this board know I am in town so we can meet up.

Tramp you and pt are on my "must meet" list. I was in Toronto last fall and failed at getting together with pt109 and wont let it happen again:o.

Looking forward to it, my friend.

It's an honor to be included in such a select group.

But Cuebuddy and the Tramp might be surprised to find that I'm a pretty serious dude in
person.
I studied the theory of relativity for years....
...and came to the conclusion that most people have an uncle.

This is true, I'm playing in my first ever league and my team is singles who got put together. One guy is a regular bar league player (this is a small room league) and I overheard one other guy talking to him and asking if he was familiar with Efren and he had no idea. I was shocked, can't imagine someone who enjoys playing enough to search out leagues but has no idea who Efren is....but it happens I guess.

Not sure what it would take to fix that, probably more regular tv coverage, but he's always on his smart phone so I'm sure he knows what YouTube is.

I was shocked at this as well at first when a friend of mine joined a league last year and told me about it. Only 1 out of his 5 team mates knew who Efren is. He did point out that this is probably the case because:

1. Most folks just join leagues to meet new people, play the game at a very superficial level and have some beers while they're at it.
2. Most importantly, his team mates are not interested in getting better. They don't really care about fundamentals, safeties, developing their break & etc. they simply just want to play & get together with folks whom they get along with or have things in common with. If this is a person's attitude, it's not surprising they won't know Efren or other big names in pool because they won't take the time to dig deeper into the game which decreases the likelihood of stumbling across great players.

I think these are fair generalizations...

Tramp, PT, & CueBuddy - i am SERIOUSLY disappointed in yáll, inthat we were NOT in the same place at the same time!?!?

i dont know who this "Efren" guy is - but we sure would have gone through Hell & HighWater to shoot with yáll!

;)

Yeah Exactly

The problem is that most pool players don't know who Efren is! Now I'm talking about the casuals and league players, but they make up a LARGE majority of the pool scene. Imagine a football player not knowing who TomnBrady is? Or a baseball player not knowing who Alex Rodriguez is? This is the real probem.

Magyar,
You have said a mouthful of problems here with this one statement and you are right. Ive talked to many league players who know nothing about the world of pool whatsoever and this is because its not in the best interest of some of the pool league systems to expose their people to the world of pool. As long as they keep everything in house and keep people focused on the team sports, that's really all they care about. Judging from the conversation here as of late, how bad is that? A lot of negativity here and that's part of the problem as well.

Pink, not long ago you chastised me for my criticism of that pseudo TV reality show that circled around here for a time, saying: "Way to not support pool.", or something like that.
Well, just for the record, I've supported pool since I was sixteen years old. I've had my own cue repair business, and have built cues with my name on them. Many are still out there being played with. I have also given lessons, and I have played in countless tournaments on both big, and small tables.
Forgive me for not inviting you.

I like to shoot precision rifles. Do it about as often as a person would play in the average league. Compete in a few matches as well. There are pro level shooters in the game but I couldn't tell you their names. Mainly because I just don't care. I do the activity because I enjoy it and wouldn't cross the street to watch someone else do it. I don't care who makes money off of it or who is the best this week. I suspect the vast majority of league players have a similar mindset.

League players are a market to try and reach with pro pool. So far no one has done a very good job of it. IMO its mainly because of the mindset I mentioned above. To reach them I think they would have to be sold the players as interesting people who just happen to play the same game they do.

Want a real eye opener?

Go to an APA league or tourney and bring up Efren or SVB's name around people you don't know.

I think you'll be amazed at the number of blank stares coming back your direction!

I've done it a few times and find it hilarious and sad at the same time!

Stones

There are only two players in pro pool according to many people, Minnesota Fats and "that Asian girl". If you say, do you mean Jeannette Lee they may perk up and if you say "The Black Widow" they say "Yea! That's the one!". Of course if you say do you mean "Ga Young Kim" you get the blank look again LOL

When I played league there was only one player who knew most of the pro's names. Quite a few thought Allison Fisher and Jeanette Lee were the two best pool players in the world because they were always on TV. A few wondered why we didn't play 7 ball because that was the "pro game".

If pro players want to be recognized by league players they need to do something to earn it. I've never seen or heard of a pro player putting on a clinic or anything for league pool unless it was Vegas. Not many league players ever go to Vegas.

Why do most older people know the name Willie Mosconi? Because he had advertising and he did a million exhibitions. Good luck finding anyone under 40 (outside of a very serious pool player) who knows Willie Mosconi's name.

Hmm, I play on a BCA league and everyone I play with, and all the top players in the league, know and follow the pros. They may not buy many streams, but they watch matches on YouTube. I find it hard to believe that there are many really top-notch league players who don't know Efren or any pros. Watching pros play - on ESPN back in the day and on YouTube today - is one of the primary ways that all the good players I know have learned about position and patterns and shot selection, etc.

I work with a Filipino girl. I told her that all Filipinos are good at pool, and she said like efren "bata" Reyes. I was like omg you know efren! I guess she's from the same town. So I started posting pictures of efren in the office and I keep bringing it up and now whenever I talk to her she's like I don't give a shit about efren. I told her being from efren's hometown is like being friends with jesus
