It would appear the game that we love is experiencing a rebirth and i truly believe its happening in part because of this forum. Now im not saying that everyone gets along and everyone acts shall we say "gingerly" with eachother. However i do believe that due to this forum and the people on it we are seeing a newer generation of players, tournaments, and outlets for our passion of the cueing arts. I have had the pleasure of checking out the TAR website and the things that they are doing in my opnion are very important to bringing our game to a new level in noteriety. With live telecasts and broadcasts via the web it is allowing people all over the world to witness such greats as Efren Reyes, John Schmidt, Alex Pagulayan, and of course Shane Van Boening to name just a few. Now espn as we know and espn classic as well as MSG are showing billiards but it is so far and few it might as well be extinct. We need an outlet and i think TAR is doing a great job providing us with the relief we need.
Another aspect of this rebirth is Mike Janis and his work with the viking tour and of course his new contract with viking. I am happy to say i live in the east coast and am going to try to make my way down to as many of the events as i possibly can.
The super billiard expo was incredible this year. I spoke about it recently in a past post stating how inspiring it was to see that many people, friends, cuemakers, retailers, and players gathered together in support of our sport. I wish the people from Nike or Starbucks could see these events and how the monetary possibility is there. Every professional player that I saw there was more than happy to stop and take a quick picture share some advice and I even got to play a few racks with Mika Immonen, Chanelle, Charlie Williams, and John Schmidt. It really was a great day.
All of these things and more i believe are contributing the rebirth of our sport. Bring it to the masses let them see the skill and the discipline it takes to simply run one rack from the break the very last ball. A good friend of mine Steve from NY once said "with all the kids out there trying to match the high score on guitar hero and rock band you would think that there would be more people out there trying to match Mosconi's high run". i truly think it is a great view. This is why players like Austin Murphy are important. Think what you want about his ability or how he played against Efren but the kid showed heart in his outing. he played a true master and in a way he triumphed. How many of us can honestly say we took some games off the magician himself Efren Reyes.
As for this forum i believe that the information that is passed around here is invaluable. In one instance you can get live updated match results to finding out what cue Ronnie Alcano used in what match. It truly is a great place. In the for sale section it really is a dare i say plethora of cues, cases, and other things including schon cues. Sorry shameless plug for my own post. I believe that if we keep this up that if we and others like us who share the same passions for pool that we do keep pushing we can place this sport and yes it is a sport in the mainstream where it belongs.
