The Smoking Ban -- Phase Two

I've been playing the same pool hall in west Denver for 45 years. For the past couple years, a statewide smoking ban took hold and a few of us oldtimers had some difficulties playing without our nicotine crutch.

Recently one guy has been chewing Nicorette and playing with a fake cigar that lights up when it touches his tongue -- it's a device for actors on stage. But it allows this guy to play the same way he has since childhood, sucking on the tube, fooling around with his fingers, placing it on the table while it still appears to be burning, and then he shoots.

His game is back on track and he's beating the youngsters again. As you've already guessed, the pink-lunged crowd has decided that this behavior can't be tolerated. Why? you ask. Oh, it constitutes harassment, claim the pure-bred youngsters who think Redbull isn't a drug.

What's your call? No air is fouled; no laws are broken. This is about theater and nothing else. If you know pool, you know pool is about theater as much as cueing -- at least in some circles.

Anyone?

I think it's ridiculous. He isn't smoking so it shouldn't be an issue.

someone having a problem with a fake cigar is pretty weak.

I am ecstatic about the smoking ban though, it's going to go a long way in savings in healthcare for this country in the long run.

The room that I play in NC refuses to honor the ban.

I am about to open up a room and I am not sure what I will do.

From what I understand the NC ban is mainly enforced by ordinary citizens. The places I go to are non-smoking at least for now and I am ecstatic about it. One of em had no ventilation so every time I was in there it was like sitting next to an ashtray full of cigs for 8 hours.

So long as the place has good ventilation to deal with the smoke it's not much of a bother to me.

This place has terrible ventilation.

But being from NC, I hate the ban.

I am not a smoker, but I don't like the ban at all. If I go to a bar/pool room, I expect to have to deal with it.

I don't particularly agree with the government telling business owners what their customers can do, but I do like breathing more.

I think a good compromise would be to allow smoking so long as a good exhaust system was installed in the business.

That would be a good idea. But what is good ventilation?

I used to go to Vegas. I never smelled like smoke. When I go to Harrah's Cherokee, I might as well be a cigarette. Where do you draw the line?

Any good rooms in Hickory these days?

Good enough ventilation where the smoke isn't an overpowering fog. Hickory has one of the best action rooms in NC in Randolph's. It still has the big 9 ball tournament every Sunday playing between 70 and 130 players. I will be there tomorrow afternoon and Rack n Roll in Newton on Sunday.

The week after next I'm gonna go over to the new room in Cornelius to check it out.

I'm a smoker but I don't think I would be against a ban in pool rooms. I enjoy a smoke or 3 like any other smoker but for my health, a ban would be welcomed.

How could someone with the name 'Natureboy' not ban smoking. Clean air, good health, vitality.
I urge you to ban the smoking. It's just no good for anyone, and I've got a zipper on my chest to prove it.

I honestly don't get people paying like 7 BUCK a Pack to kill themselves in Arizona, yes $7.00/PACK!

A PACK A DAY AT SEVEN BUCKS A PACK = $210.00 AMONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN THINK OF BETTER THING TO SPEN $210.00 ON.....

Mully, I thought you just quit... Are you back suckling the nic teat? Say it ain't so!

Re: the OP. There's absolutely no basis to prohibit this man from snarkling on an LED prosthetic, unless he's leaving saliva slime trails on the rails. It makes you wonder if there's other dastardly elements in play; that he's gotten under people's skin for other reasons.

My 2 cents

I am a smoker that likes too smoke when i play, luckily i play in SC,i dont spend my money in NC anymore.I maybe wrong about it ,but thats my right ,what few i have left,It should have been a public vote

You nailed it, KoolKat. The guy specializes in mind games. Any way he can throw an opponent off his game, he'll do it. But he backs it all up with his cueing.

If the public voted it would have been banned long ago. Well maybe not in some hick backward states.

We have the smoking ban here in Colorado and it is working great...
In the begining the smokers complained alot , and went out side to smoke..
I love the clean air in the poolrooms now...

It's just continued discrimination against those of us who choose to enjoy a little nicotine!

Randolph's is a Sunday or Saturday tournament? 130 players? Wow!

I'm not far away, I will have to come and check those out.
