The "Super" Chalk Thing

I really hope that was a general post and not targeted to me in general. Mosconi was a hell of a player, but I dont think he could do it on the modern tables. They are much faster and much tighter than the old days.

you are are just digging yourself deeper scooter...

Mosconi was the best ever not because of cloth or balls ... or tips or chalk..or plywood shafts

he had a STROKE and knew how to use it to control the CB..

ya see the ARM controls the CB.. not the gear..

if you really want to spend money on equipment to improve your game... buy better balls

but it still won't replace mastering the stroke

I never said he was good because of those things. What I'm saying is, he would not fare as well on today's table. I never said the man couldnt shoot. However I am starting to have a feeling you have trouble with Reading Comprehension.

And the equipment does make a difference. Maybe not at your level of play but it does. If not why don't the pros shoot with sportcraft cues and chalk?

umm because sportcraft isn't sponsoring them

Mosconi couldn't play because of your childish need to feel superior??

what a joke... if anything todays conditions make the game EASIER..

perfectly weighted balls on a consistent surface... he would have ran 1000..

like I always say their are are two types of pool players.. those who think they know what they are doing.. and those of us who actually do..

let me know when you spend your way to a world title.. you will forgive me for not holding my breath..

Where do you get 50 dollar tip?

Or 200 dollar plywood shaft?

Cant argue with the Kamui Chalk part though....

Seriously though. See you at the Open princess.

tell you what chalk boy you post a video of YOU performing a shot .... any shot... that you feel requires miracle chalk.. 3 times in a row unedited..

and I will use "Pioneer" chalk and perform each of your shots better than you did..

I'm not much of a gambler.. but I would be willing to put .. a few dollars on the line.. just to embarrass you in front of the real pool players..

You didnt answer any of my questions.

....and if your so confident...Pony up and play the US Open.

Plenty of "real pool players" there.

I dont know I keep listening this toothless old mutt yappin....

The challenge is out there. Show up at the open, then crawl home with your tail between your legs cryin like a whipped dawg.

translation... he called my bluff.. and I got nuthin

have a a nice day scooter..

p.s. my offer stands

So if a pro had a choice between being sponsored by Sportcraft and using their crap or Predator, McDermott, etc.. you dont think they would use Sportcraft do you? That stuff sucks lol.

A good stroke will take you very very far. Good equipment can put you over the top compared to crappy stuff.

Gene if you are well versed as a player you already know that part of your pre-shot routine is to Chalk between shots. I was taught this more than 30 years ago when none of these chalks were even thought of, all we had back then was Masters and Triangle to my knowledge. So, I don't really see much advantage in not chalking as often, I mean when I am playing I am thinking between shots exactly what I want to do next.

I have few miscues, and those I have I think it is safe to say were due to a poor stroke more than the chalk I am currently using. I think in most cases people can and will find an excuse for poor performance, with that said I also think that in far to many cases, some players just can't see that the problem was thier fault in the first place.

I own a pool room so every day I here the regular suspects blame everything except their performance for a loss or a missed shot, however, this behavior also makes these same people vulnerable and they shark themselves. Over time they stop trying to figure out what they are doing wrong and why they are not improving, I mean that is kinda the way it go's with excuses, those who use them too often start believing thier own bull shit.

Then these new products come along, and I am not saying they are bad or dishonestly represented and these people try everything they can get their hands on to fix problems that are really part of their game. They buy all the new Tips, Chalk, Shafts, and so on, they also never find the solution to their problem.

I don't blame the manufactures, I am certain they believe that their products are better than what they are designed to replace, and it doesn't hurt anything anyway because a fool and his money is going to part no matter what it's just life!!!

JIMO

I totally agree with Craig here! People will spend $800 on a new stick or some gimracks in a heartbeat. But, try and get them to pay $40 for a pool lesson that will do more for their game than any amount of equipment will ever do. Most of the time a pool lesson is not going to happen!

Ummmm, what he said. They got, better balls and better cloth today. I would take that anyday over a 5x10, with slow cloth, average tips, and most of the time no air conditioning. I could only imagine how the rails were affected from one room to another in the good "old" days. Yet, Mosconi conquered all, still ran over 500 (strange nobody else could beat him being it was so "easy")

Another banger that wants to take away from Mosconi because some tables had large pockets, but certainly not all of them. whatever !!

12ozCurl...That is an ignorant statement about one of the best players in history. Mosconi won 15 world championships, against quality opponents. Not all tables were 5 inch pockets. Not only that, but there is not a HUGE difference between 5" pockets and 4.5" pockets (the current 'pro' standard). If you can hit the center of the pocket you can still pocket balls, even into 4" pockets. Nobody else has beaten Mosconi's 526 record on ANY size pocket table...and it's been almost 60 years. Not saying it might not be beaten by some of the great players today...but to say what you said is just wrong.

5 inch pockets....

softshot. Nice post! Not to disagree, per se...but technically nobody can "control" the CB...not even Efren. The only thing you can control is the cuestick (and the arm controls that). The only three things you can control with the cuestick, in any given shot, are angle (level cue), speed (how you swing the cue), and spin (where you strike the CB)...(cover your ASS, and you'll play well...lol).

Noah...How right you are. How about try to get someone to actually INVEST in their game, spending a few hundred! LOL Funny how when one actually DOES invest the time and money, how it pay dividends for years to come (maybe not immediately, for some, but it will pay off in the end)! BTW, I'm mailing your dvd on Monday...finally! LOL :D

On topic here...all GOOD chalk works well (KMart and Walmart chalk does NOT work well), whether is it Master, Triangle, Blue Diamond or Kamui. Use what you like, and what works best for you! I agree with Craig, and others, that chalking between shots is a natural, and necessary, part of your routine in playing good pool (physically. mentally, and psychologically).

My comment has been blown way out of preportion. My point still stands. That if Mosconi was to play a game on today's equipment, he would be at a disatvantage. His run was accomplished on a 8ft Brunswick table with 4 7/8 corner pockets and 5 3/8 side pockets. By today's standard these pockets were buckets. To put it in prespective, A diamond pro-am comes with 4 1/2 on the corners and 4 7/8 on the sides. With faster cloth comes more cueball squirt, adding difficulty there as well.

Drawing a parrallel to billiard's sister sport: Golf

Not to take away from the Great Bryon Nelson, but on today's courses, he would probally get a stroke or two from someone like Sean O'Hair. Games get tougher to challenge players.

ONCE AGAIN, I never said Mosconi couldnt play or that he wasnt great. I stand firm in my belief that he would not be able to make a run like that on modern equipment.

Scott: I respect your opinions and what you have done for the sport, but even you have to admit, in the years you have been around the table, that things aint the way they used to be.

12ozCurl...You're right...things aren't like they used to be. However, I think the old cloth and balls were tougher to do things, and therefore the old school players were actually better skilled. Today's equipment makes it easier...just like golf! Pocket size is "splitting hairs". If you hit the center of the pocket, like I said, you can still pocket balls, even on 4" pockets...which are ridiculously tight. IMO, it's comparing apples to oranges, because we can't raise Willie from the dead, to come see what he could do today (which, if we could, I would want the 30 year old Mosconi over the 70 year old one). He was 42 when he ran the 526 in OH. Given a little time to "learn" the equipment, imo, Mosconi would still run hundreds, even on today's equipment.
