There are many rumors about the legality of ivory and ivory trading. Mr. David Warther, a noted ivory dealer has supplied the American Cuemakers Association with the whole story. Thanks for the info. This plus a few other reasons are why as a cue buyer I am done with ivory. Politically, this is a real hot button issue for me.
-strongly agree with sport hunting of elephants
-strongly disagree with poaching for ivory
-strongly disagree with UN in volvement in regulation
-strongly disagree with most import and export controls
-strongly agree that elephant harvesting must be done in a managed way


Are elephants a good farm animal candidate? They could be farmed for ivory, leather and meat like cows. Then natural populations would be less exposed to poaching cause the bottom would drop out on the price. When was the last cow poached?


Last, how are Deer, Elk and Moose antler treated when thrown in this mix? I believe Deer, Elk and Moose are farmed.

Most are natural sheddings and legally hunted for their meat antlers.
It doesn't pay to kill those animals for their antlers alone.

I would think their gestation periods are prohobitively too long, i.e they don't reproduce too easily.

The only part of your summary that I agree with is that harvesting should be done in a managed way. Being a protected species on reservations in certain countries is a type of farming. There is no way commercial farming could take place as the time required for maturity and the acreage and cost would be prohibitive. Other than Kenya and South Africa there is little effort or enough money to properly protect these animals from being hunted to extinction.

I use a lot of ivory and love it but the ivory I buy, hopefully, is legal under the conditions set by both my country and the conventions set up to protect the future of these and all protected animals.
