The World Summit of Pool

Hell No! I went in there once and my first time was definitely my last. That place is, IMO, a place for nonpoolplaying dates.

I mean, if they can't do Grand Central, why in the name of all things pool would they choose Slate?
Maybe to give the perception of pool being "upscale"????

I played a tournament in a mall on a Saturday afternoon and it stunk. I can't imagine what those guys went through playing in that setting.

I understand the promotion part, but ........

Maybe next year they can play it on indoor/outdoor tables in central park. :p

What mall was this? I wouldn't mind playing in Phipps Plaza... Could hit up bebe and Armani between matches :D

Was Grand Central REALLY a good place for it? The matches I saw on TV looked like the people passing through were just agravated that "something" was interferring with their movement. I hope I'm wrong.
Actually, people passing by had absolutely nothing blocking them from getting where they have to go. If anything, they would stop to see what was going on, and some paid to sit down and watch. Even at the point where people/passersby where standing to watch and the crowd was at most 4 deep, there was still plenty of room to get by. I wish I knew exactly what the specs were.

It was a neat place to hold the tournament but not for $60,000 a rattle. It cost more to rent the place than was added into the tournament.

Wow-that is absurd. I figured they had worked a deal with the City to get it for nothing. What a waste! Im not sure even the US Open could overcome a nut like that.

I'm very glad to hear it. I couldn't tell from TV.

Four deep but only 15 feet wide and you know 9 Ball Girl that 3 deep of those were busted out pool players who didnt want to pay to get in.

I hope someone from the UPA actually reads these posts because ANY POOLPLAYER WHO KNOWS SLATE WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS EVENT and it won't be by my doing. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY that actually plays pool goes there and it's not just because they suck. They suck AND THEY'RE OBNOXIOUS ABOUT IT!

Especially to keep a major tournament like this in NYC...

I have nothing more to say than I absolutely refuse to play now. There is nothing remotely player-friendly about that room whatsoever and what depresses me most is that it used to be Chelsea Billiards (my all-time favorite room).

I went to that place with Mika and we had a lot of fun in there. For someone playing in the tournament for fun would like the place but if you count on tournaments to make a living I can see where that wouldn't be the best place. I do remember the couchs and I also thought they were a waste of a good table. We did have a few drinks on them while we were there.

Jude, they're going to redo the cloth on the Kim Steel tables to either blue or green Simonis. Also, only 5-6 tables are going to be used so the upstairs will be rearranged for maximum space during play.

The first 3 days of the tournament are going to be played in Slate Billiards. The last 2 days (the semifinals) are going to be played and taped at ESPN Zone in Times Square.

That makes me feel slightly better but I'm not big on the Kim Steels. They're different. They'll need new balls, too. Note: the word "need" should be taken literally.

Yes, I believe that they're going to be getting new balls as well. From what I was told, the Kim Steels are no too shabby.

C'mon. I wanna see you play. Pleeeeeaaaaseeeee! With sugar on top? :p

If they do all of this, I'll strongly consider playing. It is New York and it's difficult to pass up an event that's only a mile away from my apartment BUT I still wish it were somewhere else. That place doesn't deserve any of us.

There were 2 other places in consideration before Slate.

Say it ain't so! Ugh... I'd rather go to Fat Cat than play at Slate.

I used to love Chelsea Billiards as a senior in HS... but not because of the pool. The place around the corner would sell beer to me and my friends. We would then go to Chelsea, get a table downstairs and drink. Oh yeah, ocasionally we'd shoot a couple of balls in. If I only knew then what a great pool hall it was. :(

From reading the UPA site, it looks like the final four matches will be held at the ESPN Zone.
