The Zone -- Are We There Yet?

So you won't be sitting on my lap at the upcoming Christmas gig? Sorry you feel that way. Yes I Play Santa. My favorite was at FOB Kalsu in Iraq. I was taught that Santa is about the spirit in your heart. Well at the age when the illusion is revealed. 🤷‍♂️
Pretend even works on the pool table. When I am standing at survey with hand cradling chin, I ask myself "what would Efren do?" Then I pretend. 🤷‍♂️
You have a great attitude and also make a good point. Maybe I'll try it, sure can't hurt.

Anyone who's ever ran a rack of 9B will usually have times when they don't even realize it was a BNR until their opponent or a spectator says something. That tells me the subconscious is shooting. You're not judging yourself or thinking while playing.

Yep. And it's like accidentally turning on a light with a hidden switch. Thursday I was playing like dog meat and my opponent needed 2 points to win (BCA 9-ball). I started shooting. The person scoring my match had to go to the table and physically stop me after I scored 28 straight to win - I just kept shooting. No recollection of most of it.

If you could find that switch it would be something . . .

This more or less nails it for me. Musicians by the time they can play tunes and pieces, have pretty much mapped out the zone. The notes, intonation, rhythm; gotta get all that wired before you can begin to play. By the time they become professionally skilled, the zone _is the gig_. The plus/minus becomes very narrow and those still clamming it don't get called.

So pool... you need to love it. Every time you do it, it's your sanctuary. What I'm saying essentially is practice the zone; slowly and passionately. Learn it and make it grow. Small steps...
I recall getting up on stage at a local watering hole where the guys have a jazz quintet we let loose every sat nite.
I've had Ad- Lib solos where I don't remember a damn thing about them until somebody mentions the chord progression or timing lead in.
I should probably work on that so I don't get as much food thrown at me.🤣🤣

Measurable brain waves would disagree. Performing tasks effortlessly and fluently is a characteristic of alpha and theta brain wave states. It's def a thing. Players not remembering details of their performance also fits nicely.
I knew sooner or later there be a comment like this. The sad part about it is, that person has never watched a match where one of the players is tuned in and turned on while the other player warms his seat. The hard money matches going til all hours where guys are automatons at the table, taking it all. Probably doesn't know where he's at or what time it is, but he just put together a six pack.👍🏼

There was a PBS documentary on the blues hosted by Clint Eastwood years ago.
In it he’s interviewing Dr John & Dr John turns to the piano, says I added this & plays a marvelous one handed riff.

I remember thinking he does that as easily as someone speaking.

And that is the top of the mountain.
In and out baby.

The line I remember is, "Close enough for jazz." :ROFLMAO:

I got "in the zone" quite a few times when I was doing Joe Tuckers shot drills.
There was no shot in the drills I could not make more than about 50 /50. Some we would make 10 out of 10 90% of the time. But, when you put that many shots together , going from easy to very difficult, it starts to become more dependent of focus. And that is what the zone is to me , it also can involve doing things you never or almost never did before, but that is really rare.
I had just moved back to Ohio from Phoenix , I didn't play well out there because I didn't usually feel very good. especially for any length of time. Like even 2 hours. I did have a couple of pretty good outings, but it was usually mediocre.
I get Joes drills and there is one shot I can't get to react correctly , the rail must have been hard in that exact spot . I even had a couple of pros try the shot , we could all do it at the pool room , but no one could do it on my table, so I moved the ball 1/2 inch easier and it became makeable like I figured it was supposed to be. It still took a good stroke after pocketing the ball to get there. and thats what is important.
Anyway , when I started the drills I think I shot a 220. I stayed there a couple of sets and it started coming down, I felt like I was playing pretty good at 170.
Then at 150 I felt I was probably playing close to my speed before I got really sick. I spent another month on this drill and about 2 hours more of practice and playing a few hours a day at the pool room and I got down to 130. Now I was playing my best days out, level. I felt pretty good about knocking 100 shots off my workout in just a few months and I figured any improvement from here would be tough.
I kept playing and practicing and I went up some days to 150 or even 160, but almost never higher and I fluctuated between 130 and 140 usually and I would get a great start some times then waste 7 shots on a ball I normally made in 2 max.
One night I thought about just taking the night off, I was tired , not in a good mood and figured I would have a lousy round anyway and just waste my time. I got downstairs, thought, I'm here , I'm not wasting the time, lets go. I shot a 117 and it should have been around 100 to 105 , I missed so many easy shots at the end because I had crushed all my expectations and even some of my dreams, In retrospect, like when you are in a serious do or die game, when you make the tough shot, take a moment and gather your thoughts, or you will misfire even an easy shot. I wish I had done that , but I didn't . Joe Tucker said when he was on the tour , that was what he was shooting!
I'm sure some of you can do it regularly , probably even beat it, but it isn't easy! Try it if you think it is. Remember , unless the table is broken, no fudging! NO saying , my wife told me the dog died in the middle of the shot or , the house caught fire, nothing, otherwise it's a lie ,and you are a liar. period. Anyway, I highly recommend those drills , I got in the zone several times playing them in 4 months and it seemed like my concentration while playing improved so much it was ridiculous, before, if a guy across the room moved I got yipped, after this drill for 4 or 5 months, I barely noticed anything, and that's usually a great thing!
Good luck to everyone, I hope this helps you as much as it did me.

I've mentioned it a few times but on YouTube on the AccuStats channel there's an old straight pool match, Jim Rempe vs. Buddy Hall. You can clearly see the phenomenon you're describing, and they are both pretty in stroke, going back and forth with runs. You see one guy mess up by a fraction of an inch and the other guy just starts raining balls in.

The line I remember is, "Close enough for jazz." :ROFLMAO:
Yeah, he had a few others too. Lol.
We have a great place to play. Little wine garden outside of St. Louis with a clientele of yuppie jazz lovers who wouldn't know a decent ad lib run from corn flakes!!
They're there for the Vîno, my friend. We could be bangin' on buckets and pluckin' Jews harps - they'd be tickled pink.
Wouldn't know the difference anyway.😭🤣

One of my Faves. I'm a 14:1 guy.

Like in pool - Man you're on tonight! Right. As long as they pay. lol.

I dabble in combo instruments so I have a pretty large suck zone. I know what I like though and the "good stuff" these days is a rare commodity. Most of it is tailored for the masses. Woot...

Anyway, now I have a clearer picture of your aiming sense.
:ROFLMAO:

Long as they go in baby...

And here I thot I was hiding my real speed. 🤣

In all seriousness tho, it's hard to find a venue that will let you off the leash, so to speak. They want it all filtered for the masses. Nothing too expressive or "individualistic" is a term I heard once. Lol. 🙄
Keep to the sheets fellas and don't wander off the page. 🤣🤣
Now that's some improv for ya!!🤣😭🤣

No shit. No lisnin joints, rarer than pool rooms. So tired of autotune. Wouldn't mind auto make for pool though.
