I was just on the phone for about 45 minutes trying to get the remote on my new TV programed. Their are like 50 possible different codes to try and we must have gone through about 40 before we hit on the right one.

The guy was so nice and easy going as ths went on and on I asked him where he was. He said in the Philippines. I thought he was going to say India or something thta is what they usually say when I call Comcast.

Anyway I said you know who Efren Reyes is? He says sure he plays billiards. I mention a few other names and he knows them all, and he doesn't even play pool himself. I was just surprised. What would be the chances in the US you could mention the name of a pro-player and have any one know it.

I had the same thing happen in Belgium when I was looking for Raymond Ceulemans pool room I asked a girl at a check point of some kind. She knew exactly who I was talking about although she didn't know where it was.

Efren is a celebrity in the Phillipines. Every Filipino I know knows him, even the non-pool players. We have a lot more Filipino's here so it's no news to me. Efren is a celebrity but Manny Pacquiao is a god.

I was in Myrtle Beach this year and I ate at an Asian restaurant and my waitress was from the Philippines. I told my wife to watch this and I told her she and I knew the same person and I mention that his name was Efren Reyes. I could have knocked her over with a feather and my wife did not have a clue as to who he was.

Efren is a national icon in the Philippines, pretty much the same way Americans view Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan. Just wanna share some of Efren's media appearances in the Philippines over the years:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95F6HtoKi28 - Efren and Django as guests in a local late night TV show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfB_XhkuN-8 - Efren starring in a beer commercial along with Manny Pacquiao
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idmzP408iD4 - An English-subtitled local TV documentary about the life of Efren Reyes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qENJCjf1wpo - a 2003 Filipino action movie starring Efren Reyes in a lead role :D

Attended a concert in Niagara Falls, NY last year. Heard the woman behind me speaking in her native tongue. After the concert finished, I asked her if she was speaking Pinoy dialect by any chance. She asked how I knew. Told her I play pool from time to time with some guys who speak it. First words out of her mouth were Efren Reyes? He never ceases to amaze me.

another reason why people adore Efren,

^in other news, Pacquiao will be running for senate in next year's elections. as a congressman, he only reported 4 times in office, out of 70 congressional sessions this year. can you imagine that? the congressman with most number of absences running for a higher position?

There should be a tournament between the best Asian players and Europe - I know, let's call it the "Efren Cup".

Pacquiao's success got to his head, but most importantly he is a meathead Bible-thumper. That's why I always believed that politicians ought to have the right qualifications, and being a famous action star (Estrada/FPJ) or a top athlete (Pacquiao) are definitely not the right ones. But of course, people voted for him so Pacquiao alone is not to be blamed why he's a congressman in the first place...

Anyway, here's another video of Efren: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGEMAZnaCcw It features him and Antonio Lining coaching two ladies wearing nothing but their bikini while playing 8-ball pool ;)

Efren -all Pinoys know
Buste- only some know
Orcullo - many Pinoys never heard of him. They think I am asking them whether they know how to play Othello

Pacquaio is letting power get to his head . He is selling his soul by getting into politics and sleeping with the snakes and snake oil salesmen. I do not know of anyone who looks rosier after getting into politics .

BTW do you know what happened to the MP Cup tourneys? There are none since the ones early this year:grin-square:

I was on the phone with a customer service problem with something and a girl was helping me. We had to wait while something was being processed and I asked where are you located. She said the Philippines. I asked about Efren and we chatted pool for about 5 minutes. She knew all about him.

I was on a cruise with family this summer, one night at the dining hall I asked our server if he was Filipino... He confirmed, then of course I ask, "Do you know Efren Reyes?" He nodded his head with a grin, then made a gesture of shooting pool.

Reyes is truly a (inter)national treasure and icon in billiards!

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, last summer at an extraordinarily exclusive golf and tennis club. (A friend is a member of a less exclusive "reciprocal" club in Boston.) Pinoy waiter. Same story. Huge Smile. Extra large cocktails and extra attentive service.

Efren's bridge

So I'm having new high speed internet installed, and the technician was Filipino, talking to someone on his cel in Tagalog, when I asked him if he knows who Efren is...
"Ohhhhhh!!!! Magician!!!"

Efren is indeed a national hero... I've heard stories where he's giving money away to help some poor people in the Phillipines... President Reyes?

I'm liking this thread. Even Filipinas that haven't even played pool in their entire lives know The Efren.

But I'd like to add another Filipino athlete as big, IF NOT BIGGER, as name as Efren.
Most pool enthusiasts are bowling aficionado as well.

Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno, is a six-time World Bowling Champion Filipino bowler. He has won the World Cup of Bowling four times (1976, 1980, 1992 and 1996). Nepomuceno has also won the World's Invitational Tournament in 1984 and the World Tenpin Masters championship in 1999.

In its September 2003 issue, the Prestigious Bowlers Journal International named Paeng as the Greatest International Bowler of All Time.

He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for three records:

1) for most Bowling World cup wins, 4, in three different decades.
2) for being the youngest ever to win the Bowling World Cup (at 19 years of age),[1]
3) for having won the most number of bowling tournament titles. Currently, Paeng has 130 career bowling titles. Paeng who still actively competes up to this day is the only bowling athlete to have won or awarded titles in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Not bad eh..
