Things I love about playing pool...

Just in a reflective mood I guess... I could keep going but thought ya'll might want to add your thoughts as well...

1. The people: Pool is the only sport I know that cuts across all layers of society. You simply never know who you'll meet

2. War stories: I love listening to stories that this game generates, whether from the road warriors of old or the last great action story- it doesn't get more interesting in any other sport.

3. Sharing knowledge: I've never seen anyone turned down that was honestly seeking helpful instruction in a pool hall. The better players are always willing to share experience on making shots and improving stroke.

4. A beautiful cue: My achilles heel- there is simply something magical about a handmade instrument that displays the natural beauty of wood.

5. Every game is different: There are so many subtleties in each shot that you will never play the same run of balls twice. Each game presents new challenges and opportunities.

6. Getting in the zone with stroke: I am never more at peace than when I find stroke and each stroke is smooth and effortless and the cueball simply dances at my command.

7. Playing with my kids: It started with holding them on my hip and progress through hand pool to full up competition. Some great conversations happen around the pool table and I will always treasure each one.

8. Playing a world class player in tournaments: It doesn't happen in any other sport. Pay your fee and you might match up with a world champion. Winning isn't the point- it's being in the arena and taking your shot.

9. Anywhere you go you can find a game: Everytime I go on travel I research ahead to find a new place to go play and I have always found a good game.

10. Making that impossible shot when it means the most: Just simply pulling off the key shot that makes the set, match, league night, or whatever is on the line

not bad, but the last 3 don't work for me....kid's not old enough yet, never came across a world class player at a local tourney, and I've played for hours without anyone ever coming up to play ( <----I'll probably get hammered for that last one!!! :) LOL ).

I somehow posted in mid edit... sorry.

About finding the game- I've found that lots of folks will respect time ball striking and not approach someone that appears to be in serious practice. Whenever I really want to get a game in someplace new I'll settle on a table near the front and take lots of time between games sitting, sipping, and making eye contact. Usually works but if not I go seek one out. Of course my game isn't intimidating either- miss a ball every now and then!:D
 
no, the reason I said I'd get hammered is that in another thread I had mentioned that I don't play for $$....so, I figured I'd hear that's the reason. I did play quite a bit tonight though (from 6-9). First guy came over from a barbox, and we probably played 20ish racks of 9 ball, then a friend dropped in and we played some 9 and then 8 ball. For all the money players out there.....MAN I WISH I'DA BET!!! LOL :)
 
I play pool because:

I love the sounds of the game, I love the sound the cue makes when striking the cue ball with a perfect stroke, I love the click sound of the cue ball striking the object ball, sending it torwards the pocket to drop with the crisp sound of hitting center pocket to hear the object ball race down the ball return and drop in the return box with a thud that equals the sound of perfection.

I love the sounds of the balls being racked in the wood triangle. A sound that equates a goal was reached and another challenge is getting ready to be laid out on the table as soon as I release a loud, hard, thundering break that echoes throughout the pool room!

I love the feel of the game. I love the feel of the irish linen as I ever so softly cradle the cue anticipating the vibration of a stiff hitting cue striking the cueball. I love how the cloth feels as I make my bridge on the table. I love the fine muscle memory feelings of a smooth fluid stroke, as i confidently send the shot on its path of perfection.

I love the Visualization of the game. After I deliver the perfect stroke, I love to watch, without moving a muscle, the tiny, bright, beautiful, colorful balls travel down the perfectly sited line towards the big pocket. I love to see the colorful ball roll off of the table like the bright yellow sun setting in the grand canyon, a true site of perfection.

I love the emotions of the game. I love the amount of concentration I must have to play well. I love that confident feeling of approaching the table, Knowing I am going to run alot of balls. I have the courage, inner piece and calm to control my nerves and make ball after ball after ball.

he did cover it very well. And remember, for anyone traveling and wanting to play pool, just:

1) go to http://www.google.com
2) In the search block, type 'Billiard rooms in City, State'
3) Click on "maps' at the top left of screen.
4) Billiard rooms in that city will have alpha red teardrops.
5) Click on the teardrop to get a picture, address, phone number. Further options: Get directions, search nearby, street view, save to my maps, send to phone, edit.
6) You can also 'right click' for some options for directions.
 
I love playing pool because it is the most challenging thing I've ever done. I love that I can be shooting great one minute, and not so great the next. I love this game.
 
11. the escape.. when you are in the zone and dropping ball after ball there is no mortgage, no kids, no wife, no job, there is just nice wood, flat felt, and balls that need a hole.

It gives your soul a break from life..

Thats why I play pool.
 
1. Watching my wife pull off a 4+ ball runout.
2. The sounds of a pool room with no jukebox.
3. When you're walking around the table after a good break, you instantly forget about your day at work and the bills on the kitchen table.
4. Watching friends get better.
5. Age, Color, and Finiancial status have no meaning at the pool table.

1 thing I don't like
My grandfather never got the chance to see me transform from a ball banger to a player.
 
i love the pure feel and enjoyment of stroking the cue backwards and forwards, and striking the cue ball to hit the object ball into the pocket. the bottom line of why i love pool if you like, i just love that very basic motion and get so much enjoyment from it.

also i love the competitive and strategical aspect of the game, the one on one element. not only is it a battle of minds, but a battle of execution too. unlike a game say like chess, which only has the mental battle part. no execution skill required to move that pawn two squares forward!
