I am thinking of going to the US open this year, not to play, strictly for knowledge and observattion. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio, so its quite a drive, and i just wanted to know from anyone who has been if it is worth it. Would you reccomend going to spectate?

Thanks!

I went last year with two friend for the last three days and had a blast. It was probably the only pool tournament I have ever been to that I haven't played in the tournament.

We were able to go over to Q Masters after the matches and watch a little gambling and I managed to play two famous players for some very cheap games of one pocket. The GingerBread Man (Jay Helfert) and Eeeeeeasy Money (Ronnie Alcano). Won one game from GBM and broke even with Ronato.

One of my friends brought a pair of binoculars for each of us and we enjoyed that as we could watch many matches at the same time. Binoculars are a plus. We also rented a car to go back and forth to the pool hall. Great time had by all.

I've been to both events several times, the Derby City Classic is 10X better. IMO.

Come on, have you ever seen that marching band Brady has at the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship? :D

Personally -- and this is just my opinion -- they are two totally different pool events.

The Derby is more like a pool convention, I think, with multiple competitions going on simultaneiously for players of all caliber, vendor booths, and action, all under one roof. That's the plus side for sure. The only downside for ME at the DCC is sleep deprivation. Luxurious sleep is not possible when I go to Louisville in January. When I was younger, I could stay up all night for couple days, but the DCC is a week long, and when I return home, it literally takes me a week to recover. :o

The week-long U.S. Open is one tournament, one game, and most of the competitors are there on a mission. There is no action or gambling until after hours at the Q-Masters pool room, about a 10-minute drive from the Chesapeake Conference Center. The climate of the U.S. Open is quite different than the DCC in that each competitor who paid is $500 entry fee wants to win that title. To be a U.S. Open champion is the stuff that pool dreams are made of. Of course, the people in Virginia are friendly, welcoming, and ooze of that good old Southern charm. :)

US Open

I've been going to the US Open for years. I used to have a couple of friends that I went with and they moved to other cities and I like the tournament so much that I go by myself now. It's a great time and a lot of friendly people plus the best pool players in the world! How can you beat that.......

Here's three pages of pictures I took of my experience at the U.S. Open in 2004: http://www.hometown.aol.com/khmccready/2004USopen.html

I spoke to Barry Behrman, the U.S. Open promoter, last evening about another pool-related matter, and he told me that this year's U.S. Open Nine-ball Championship is going to be better than ever. :)

A little U.S. Open Nine-ball Championship information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Open_Nine-ball_Championship

Very nice pictures, Jenny.

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Jimmy Reid's shirt. I have one exactly like it and thought I might be the only one in the world who had that exact one. :D I wear it on special occasions only and haven't seen it for sale anywhere since I bought it years ago. It is a very nice high quality shirt but I wouldn't expect anything less from Jimmy as he always dressed great. :D
