"No Bars, no pinball machines, no bowling alley just pool this is Ames Mister!" Now in the shadow of the closing of Steinway, how long do you think a pool room would stay open if they used this as their business model? It's no wonder why so many rooms have closed here in the states with today's business climate. Sad state of affairs for pool in this country.

Seen the same shit for years at Harry P. Cues in Lynnwood, WA. 15 to 20 guys would spend all day sitting in chairs around the pool tables, BS with each other, all while waiting on Harry to come in so they could try and get a game with him. The minute he'd call someone there to let them know he wasn't coming in, within 5 minutes everyone was gone, just to come back the next day and repeat the process, day after day!

Finally after a few years, Harry P. Cues was shut down, and Billy Tacket, one of the principles told me why. In the previous month they pulled in $80,000, and asked if I thought that was pretty good for a month, I said I don't know, why? He told me they SPENT $85,000 in overhead in that same month, and the weakest area of income was the room the 13 9fts were in, because of the lack of food and alcohol sales!!! It WASN'T supporting the square footage it occupied!!!

So yeah, rail birds spend money, if you make playing pool basically free, keep the heat on so they stay warm in the winter months, and keep the air conditioning on in the summer so they don't get to uncomfortable sitting in their chairs while waiting on action to walk through the door! Rail birds are bums, they're no good for a business trying to pay the bills!!!

I saw that a tournament at Buffalo Billiards in New Orleans had a 100k Calcutta and that Fedor went for 34K and someone else went for 30k, is this true? I can’t believe this is true, can anyone confirm this?

I own a room in Ventura Ca. Stiix Billiards. This business is tough as we've seen pool rooms close in bunches in the 70's, kick in again in the 80's due to the Color of Money craze and begin a decent in the 90's and continue on from there. Look it's about Overhead period. You can make a living selling dirt if you can keep the overhead down. Leagues are and will be the salvation of pool as we know it today. No mistaking that fact. So how you corral that and serve your specific community needs is the question. Trying to own the building is very important. I was lucky, I own the building and made it through Covid. Paying rent in NY has to be like climbing up a hill that's greased down. Most pool rooms that make it are on the fringes of the city they operate in. Difficult to be in the high rent districts and you got to have parking at least in Cali. That's difficult as well. Anybody who thinks they know it all and haven't had the pleasure of making payroll and their monthly bills shouldn't be telling the rest of us how it's done. LOL
Well said, Jerry!!!

I have been to a few rooms around that operate on a very basic setup, The Rack near Detroit is one, lots of players and also lots of casual shooters there, the hardest thing they serve there is Mountain Dew and one pocket games on tight tables LOL And they do it on a pretty cheap hourly rate.

Another place in Florida I visited, and ran into CJ Wiley there, was super cheap, and did not have a lot of beer sales. I think I was charged around $20 for two drinks (including beers) and a full night of table time.

Not sure how those places stay open but they do.
