This is how pool should be...imho of course.

I watched the first four racks, and was particularly impressed with Rempke.

Others only watched some of the match like me. If it was such a compelling type of play, why weren't people watching it from first to last? I plan to go back to view the rest, just to see how well I can guess the patterns they choose.

For me, eight ball is made to look too easy at this level. In game two, Rempke played a nice touch on a shot to get nearly perfect position in a crowded area. A game or two later the Scorpion did the same thing during one of his break-and-run racks. Easy peasy for those guys. They choose the right pattern, and execute properly.

By far my favorite video of a pool match:

No *****in' about the rack. No robotic, stone-faced players. Nice little match with some amiable conversation by two of the greatest.

Pool for the spectators would be much more enjoyable (and possibly sell tickets better) if it was like this in all matches, instead of the numerous arrogant douchebags we have to watch on a fairly regular basis.

Come on...don't y'all agree this is a much better way to watch pool?

It's 8 ball, no-one argues about 8 ball racking. In the one event per year they play 8 ball in :p

My OP had nothing to do with the level of play. It was more about the friendly, back-and-forth comments the two players (that obviously respected each others game) made during their times at the table. It was akin to two good friends down at the local pool hall enjoying hitting a few racks for an hour or so.

Today's players more resemble robots than humans. Their stoic, game-face personas at the table and off make for boring entertainment.

In the video I linked, Rempe and Archer talk to each other during their time at the table and there are a few replies from the players while in their chairs. This makes for a more relaxed aura and is both beneficial to the players and the spectators, IMHO of course.

Then that one rack where they played multiple safeties back and forth....priceless.

When I play pool, I'd rather my match be more like the one in the video than what we have today. A little table-side friendly banter makes it more enjoyable to me. YMMV

In that era most players all spoke the same language at the same skill level.
Today's players can speak English, but doing so may be more revealing than they would like.

No doubt in my mind it's the best. I'd pay for that all day long. Notice short closed bridge on Mataya. Slower cloth table allowing for stroke let outs. I play on 2 slow tables and don't have to be a surgeon. Fast tables induce choking.

I just dont understand why most people don't want to use a good quality wooden triangle, no matter the game.

It's not that hard to make the wing ball and the 1 ball with wooden rack..... regardless if 1 or 9 is on the spot and breaking in or out of box.....just not that hard.

In 10 ball, it's a little more difficult but still nothing to be scared of. A little practice and the 10 ball break is just as easy as the 9 ball break..... regardless of what rack and where you break from.

People just dont want to spend time "figuring out" the racks, cushions, rails, different belts, dirty/clean...etc bals, different weather conditions etc...etc...etc..

It's just more work than most are willing to do.

But:
It pays HUGE dividends if they do.

fast cloths brought on all this BS. I don't think anything can be perfectly round anyway. (Instead a tolerance is set for the diameter. These balls are machined to appear round and to approach perfect roundness. Their shape, however, is not guaranteed to be perfectly round. There is a tolerance for error that is allowed in the interests of saving costs during manufacturing.Jan 31, 2014

I've got an old VHS tape titled The Hustler but it's a match between two old school players, maybe Sigel? I'll have to see if I can find it but it's classic old school where the players are talking shit and smoking while playing.

We're talking about the same IPT 2005, where Corey Deuel was smack talking, while playing.... and microphoned up...... about the legend Ray Martin.

Where's the honor in that?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojLwMG5naNE&t=2321s

If you are talking about that point in the match, all I hear Corey say is something like "Ray Martin just dinked 'em and made 3 balls" (which follows up on a comment he made in the rack before about how breaking hard wasn't making a ball but just dinking them would) and "nice shot idiot" (which was clearly a reference to Corey's bad shot where he left himself in the jaws of the corner pocket that cost him the previous game). I don't hear any smack talking in that rack or the one before - I do hear complaining, but then I heard that from both Rempe and Archer is the previous match.

I agree. I could be wrong (imagine that) but I didn't hear anything that would be considered anything but what I would call "CRYING"....

I've never met a pool player that didn't cry at "some point" when things didn't go their way.

A pleasure to watch. It ought to be mandatory for our current flock of pros to watch this

Respect for each other, respect for the game and a great show for the spectators

I hate handheld cameras on pool matches with a passion.

"Oh, the player seems to be talking on a pot on the corner, let me just run directly in front of him, staying in his exact eye line and try to hold a camera still which is impossible, just so the viewers have a pointless angle, and get dizzy from the shaking!!"
