Hi,
When installing a threaded ferrule, what type of glue do you like to use?
I have been using 5 min. epoxy. I was also wondering if i want to change that same ferrule to something else will the 5 min. epoxy be to hard to get out of the threads after cutting the ferrule off?
Thanks,
Owen

5 minute is fine, You cal also use the 401 white pigment by West system to dye it white, After changing the ferrule just turn the tenon to the same size as normal and chase the threads with the wood dye. No problem.

Owen, I use a differant method removing glue, heat the ferrule, by way of spinning the shaft and holding the ferrule with leather, let it spin untill hot as all get out, and then unscrew it, as soon as you can, pick the old glue from the threads, while it's holding the heat. Re-threading or chasing the threads could damage the threads, not allowing the new re-thread to align with the old ones. Big problems if that happened. I use ELMERS white glue for my ferrules. Shows no glue line at the base of the ferrule.

Removing a ferrule...

Ditto what Blud said. The only difference was I would actually put a torch to the ferrule itself. It would heat the glue up and soften it sufficiently to simply unscrew the thing. You only need apply heat to the end of the ferrule to about 1/2 way down it or end up burning the shaft. They come off super quick...and the adhesive is so soft you can pick it out of the threads with your fingernail. I wouldn't re-turn or attempt to re-thread the tenon at all. All we used to use at Black Boar were ivory and occasionally a fiber ferrule. Adhesive? Any good wood glue or white glue works just fine. Notoriously epoxies cure to a very hard, inflexible state.....most wood glues or white glues do not. Also...5 minute epoxy cures so damn fast it provides virtually no adhesion to the wood itself. Try a test....take some 5 minute...spread a thick glob on a piece of maple.....an hour later...pick at it with a tool of some sort....it'll pop right off the surface.

> I have rather limited experience here, but you can get a Wagner heat gun at Lowe's for around 35.00 tax and all that has 2 settings,750 watt and 1500. I used the 1500 setting, and without melting the ferrule at all got it hot enough that it unscrewed in about 60 seconds. Make sure if you take this route that you pre-plan a place to set the gun, unlike a blow dryer it will NOT cool off fast enough that it won't start a fire or melt whatever it touches. I used a metal coffee can. Tommy D.

what brand cue using Thread on ferrules ? just curious ? Also will one glue work on all ferrules? Thanks ... The way I learn about heat on ferrules / one time I was spinning a Meucci shaft in a lathe and using leather on the ferrule and it started turning in my hand,,,, I thought oh gosh@!!!!
