Had the pleasure of checking out the annual three cushion tourney at Carom Cafe in Flushing, Queens last night. An elite field comes together every August and they really put on quite a show. Got to watch the very best, and there was no admission charge. Wow!
Both Blomdahl and Sayginer are in the field, and Blomdahl ran a twelve while I was watching one of his matches. Local favorite Pedro Piedrabuena seems to be playing well, too.
Billiards is a beautiful game to watch, and the setting was dignified. At a pool tournament, the music is often offensive, but the first two selections I heard at Carom Cafe were Fur Elise by Beethoven and Tales from the Vienna Woods by Johann Strauss. This fit in well with the fact that every competitor wore a tuxedo.
Of course, noticeably absent from the event is Sang Lee, the co-founder (along with Michael Kang) of the room. That he missed the event in his own room seems to confirm the rumors that he's quite ill, and it's a big loss.
The tourney will continue through Sunday, and I highly recommend checking it out if your schedule permits.
