Throwing the cue

C'mon guys...is there a little leg pulling goin' on here? Using a stroke slip is one thing...but you don't have to LET GO of the butt...just let is slip forward on the U cradle of the fingers...just the opposite of a slip stroke.

I've seen at least brief footage of most of the great champions from the Mosconi era until now and have never seen anyone LET GO of the cue.

You're kidding right?

But even the stroke slip MAY be used by a very small fraction of the top players, IMHO it would be one of those "surgeon general's warnings" that ought to be included with any thought of adopting Busta's super loopy stroke or other highly unorthodox techniques.

Jim

Not kidding at all. Nick Mannino, who is a pro tour speed player, actually throws the cue through the CB and the butt goes *Bang* on the rail, the slate, whatever. His cue physically drops. Given, he doesn't COMPLETELY let go if there are balls underneath him that might cause a foul. When he breaks - he lets go and the butt-end drops after contact. He's not playing with a $15k Gina Cue or anything - just a nice sneaky pete. As I mentioned before, he wasn't the only one to play like that.

It's certainly not a surgeon general's warning thing.

I have always had difficulty understanding the idea of letting go of the cue during a shot. Someone mentioned Efren, but I don't think I've ever seen Efren shoot a shot where he was not holding onto the cue when he shot or followed through the cueball.

I understand what a slip stroke is, but that 'slip stroke' motion occurs before the forward motion of the cue, doesn't it? Are we talking about not holding onto the cue before contacting the cueball, or after contacting the cueball?
