Tight Joint

I have a cue with a flat-faced joint with 3/8-10 stainless pin. The fit is extremely tight, especially the last 1/4". Once together it takes a strong grip to get it apart. Is there a way to "lubricate" this joint without damaging the integrity of the wood, etc.? Thanks, Dave
 
Rub a candle or bar of soap on the joint pin. Might take a couple times but it'll smooth up the fit. I have even used chap stick before when out & somebody asks this question.
 
Bees wax !!!!! :cool:;) Get some and use a razor blade and shave a small sliver and stick to the side of the tip of the pin and screw into shaft . The cue maker obviously doesn't have a flat bottom tap for his shafts so the last few threads aren't full cut ... :cool:;):wink:

Has it always been this way or did it get that way over time? Lubing it will work but only for a time. Running a bottoming tap thru will fix it permamently, unless it is cause by humidity.

Don't think it's a humidity issue and although I haven't owned the cue since it was made, my guess is that it's always been this way as the previous owner stated same thing. Thanks for responses. Dave
 
Just a suggestion, If you don't have the proper Tap... Bees wax, Carnuba wax, Cue wax (which is primarily carnuba wax)
 
Forcing the screw into the shaft may damage the threads or it may cause cracking in the area where the threads aren't cut full depth.
 
Using a lube doesn't make up for a properly tapped hole.Yes it may go together better, but the result will be a greater side pressure that will eventually push out to the side and cause damage to the shaft. Anything other than proper tapping of the hole will end with a problem, IMHO. My advice would be to return it to the original maker, or if thats not possible, to someone like KJ, or Rat cues, they will be able to do it right. You will need to send the butt and shaft to them, and they will work it right! If it's tight now, wait until the more humid months. Even with a properly tapped shaft, the humid summer months can make it more tight then when it was built. I can do this work but the above mentioned are closer to you, and have been doing it longer than I, so I recommend them. Good luck,
