i've been watching through the internet feed, and i'm definitely happy about the tight pockets.

i watching charlie williams miss a straight in shot, and johnny miss a routine cut. this is the way things are supposed to be...........shoot perfect or you miss.

I've not been able to catch any of it yet, but do you think the tight pockets had anything to do with Efren not making it through?

Sometimes it seems like he plays area position more than most top players, because he can juice about any shot and get close enough, normally. But I wonder whether that approach would work as well with 4.25 pockets, even if you're Efren.

I think this has to do more with his age than the tight pockets. He's off and on in the asian tours this year and his stroke not that bad but he's 51 already. One or two years, and he may be passing the torch to younger Filipino players.

jeez guys give em a break. Efren is the greatest player whos ever lived, period. He is not getting old, so hes human. Ive had the pleasure of playing him once so far in my short career. Earlier this year in January at the Bike. He's amazing. His cueball control is FLAWLESS. In a short race to 5, alternate break, anything is possible. I guarantee you he would have made it EASILY into the knockout stages if it were a longer race such as 11. JMHO though.

If he's not getting old I would say he's not human. :D

Anyway, love that they have tightened up the pockets. Should've done that ages ago, but I guess TV has to much power in pool and they was afraid it would slow down the game.

Lol nott, u know what i mean. Mike lebron played well into his 50's and early 60's, hell he still plays great. I highly doubt lebron is in better shape physically and mentaly to outlast Efren. Efren has so much talent and knowledge, i wouldnt bet agianst him against anybody, even if hes old as dirt. :D

he snapped off derby city not too long ago

Tight pockets definately make it more interesting to the fans. It gets boring seeing the pros run out every time, but knowing they might miss a straight in shot under pressure, that keeps me glued to the match.

That is definitely a positive sign for pool! The sporting public likes drama and tighter pockets are a good start. It really has got to be more exciting for the fans in attendence at the event. If anyone has noticed there have been alot of come-from-behind matches..

I believe that Fong Pang Chao is the world's best pocketer, and that Mika Immonen is next best. Nobody should be surprised that they each won 10 - 2 today, and nobody should be surprised if one of them wins the title. Tight equipment rocks!

Enuff said. Go Mika. Go FP.

In my opinion, the pockets should be as tight as allowable by the rules...Remember years ago when the old schoolers played on those big tables with little pockets and clay balls that were all chipped and stuff. These guys ran 100's of balls. Mosconi, Caras, Greenleaf, Ponzi, Lassiter, and the list goes on and on.

I'd like to see a US Open tournament (straight pool) played on nothing but 5 X 10 tables with the small pockets like they had back then and see who the real champion is.

Back then is when you earned your keep on these unforgiving tables. Now a days it's made too easy and something in the pro circuit should be standardizied with the pockets to make it an even playing field. A player of C status can play like an A on a table with big pockets.

Just my two cents worth.

I just watched the match between Chao and Valentine and it looks like the small pockets are making a big difference. For example, Chao was on the hill 9-2. He broke and was left with a severe cut on the one. He shot it fat and missed the shot. I think that shot might have gone in with the old pockets. Even though Valentine didn't do enough with his safety and Chao ran out, it was good to see that a poorly stuck shot didn't slip in.

I'm sold! Nice to see some drama ... many more missable shots with these pockets, fewer guaranteed runouts.

Something else to consider is that the cloth is new. New cloth makes the pockets play bigger. Now, I'm not taking anything away from the level of skill these guys have, just making a point that if the tables had older worn cloth, then it would play much more tougher.
