Time to hang up my spurs, my pool career is over now that I have achieved the perfect Fargo rating

Y

You’re right. All of the rooms go by Fargo now, which is interesting. Some genius decided that an AZ 8 was like a 593 Fargo (don’t quote me on that, just an example). So they’re old “8 and under” tournament is now a “593 and under”. Couldn’t they have just rounded up or down? That old system was so subjective and needed to go.

Good luck getting Coocoo to actually answer your question…
Yep it was very selective. 10 couldn’t hardly get any playing. Think that might have been the reason.

Well rocket scientist have you seen the Phoenix Area Billiard n Darts Rag , (newspaper). Chuck Webb publishes?

Most of the Tournments use Arizona Rating System. Wonder why, could it be these Rooms and Bars want no part of Fargo.🤥

Arizona rating system was not perfect, had flaws, but work before some one invented Fargo to try, and rule Pool.

Pool, all of Pool should dump all the big fish, little pond groups like Bcapl, acs, APA, etc that all work hard for preserving their little pond.

Pool in the USA would function better, have more organization, attract more sponsor under ONE GROUP. Strength in numbers works well for PGA, NHRA, PRCA, NFL, NBA, their success shows in dollar & cent their athletes make.

You know the ratings committee disbanded, don't you? Are you all just set at your ratings for life now? :D

I only attend the tournaments that are advertised on the AZ pool player Facebook group. It covers all of the larger rooms and events, so I have no idea what system Joe's Bar uses for their 55 and over, Monday night, double elimination, race to two, $5 entry 8-ball tournament. So you think we should dump every other rating system besides Fargo?

The AZ rating system needed to go because you had a group of people who decided your rating by their own perception of how good you play. So if you had a really good set the last three times you played Bill (a member of the ratings committee), Bill would vote to raise your rating. Even if those were the only sets you won that month. Because that's all Bill saw from you. Fargo looks at all of the data from all of your games. No personal bias, no jealousy or pettiness, no subjectivity, JUST WINS/LOSSES.

Thanks for calling me a rocket scientist. It is a hobby of mine.

Well so they disbanded a AZ system that work for years, I did not know that. No big deal, as any rating system will discriminate against some group.l players.

The major complaint I heard with the AZ system was as you got higher rating. Less Tournaments to play. 9s, 10s etc. had few options to compete.

Bars liked the AZ system because the better, serious, non recreational players do not drink like the recreational players.

Bars and sports bar make money off booze n food. Drinkers pay the rent. So they ran 7 & 8s and under event where they sold booze.

If all tournments were open, the better player would show up, win, and there would be no money for the recreational players to have a chance at.

Let’s see could be like 7 years plus since my last Tournament at night, sure things changed. I stopped the competition play, when the events to be no fun for me personally.

Spending 7 hours some place to will 70-100 bucks seem like waist of time. Plus gas, wear and tear on car so what did you win.

Another grip that was heard was the better player wanted the recreational players to support pool. By entering they pro type events, but all this was feeding the prize pot by the lessor player who never had a chance of winning anything part of pot.

Most of the tournaments are still capped to keep the better players out, they just cap the fargo rating instead of the AZ rating.

So nothing has really changed, if you play at what was a 9, 10, 10-1, or 10-2 your opportunities are few.

Sports Bars, Bars, and Rooms want the people who consume alcohol that pay bills. Money keep doors open from sale of alcohol. Not quarters in bar boxes.

The top tier of player are not those who pay bills, they may draw people to watch them play but that does not pay bills.

Like I said if all Tournaments were open to ever, or any skill level. Participation who drop, and the recreational player numbers would fall, more bars would close, and place like Metro Sports Bar would be gone.

I know Metro use to have Tournaments 7 nights a week, most were 8’s or less and under.

Only one was 9’s and under. Tuesday night believe it or not was both 8 ball bar box & 9 ball big table event. Two events going at same time? Both alway had 20!plus players.

It's still pretty pathetic when they cap the tournament to "7 and under", and still handicap it. So many of these players say "handicapping works" when they're at the top of the food chain, but they won't enter a handicapped tournament that let's in higher rated players.

There is ZERO reason to cap AND handicap a tournament. There is no reward for improving in the Phoenix area.

Well back in the day before you moved here Mike Howerton use to run a multi stop event you might have liked. It was open play.

Each event was different, on 9’ table it was 8, 9, 10 Ball, Banks, Straight Pool, and last One Pocket.

Then there was 8, 9, and 10 ball on Bar Boxes. How you placed in any event gave you point toward grand prize package.

One year it was Custom Cue, plus Custom On Q Case, plus Pool table. Believe it was call Desert Classic Pool Tour.

Person with most point too all. The Events were a Grand add. Mike Howerton worked his butt off put this all together. Getting sponsors, prizes, etc.

One Bar that hosted a stop bitched about it was bad deal for them as Apparently thru put in $300.00, the good player did not drink much. But they did feed bar boxes, and those who came to watch drank.

This same Bar is now closed because of poor business practices.

Your are correct in saying the room bar owners did do mostly 7’s and under enlivened. Yes they CATERER TO RECREATIONAL PLAYERS.

Liquor sales pay the bills. Bills do not get paid, business closes.

FWIW, my bar tab was always high. Not all serious players are cheap, and not all recreational players spend a lot.
